Topic: UFX II: setting correct TotalMix level for Shure 57 dynamic mic (XLR)

I've connected a Shure 57 Dynamic Mic to the Microphone 9 input of my Fireface UFX II using an XLR cable.  I find that I need to set the gain very high -- to 45-50 -- in order to get any reasonable level out into Logic Pro X.  In fact I find I have to add some gain in Logic as well.  Please see attached image.  What am I doing wrong?  It's a dynamic microphone, so I don't need to add phantom power.  I don't see what else to do to bring it a more normal level.  Thanks for any advice.

As an additional question: is it OK to plug in/unplug XLR microphones with the UFX II switched on?

As a dynamic microphone, the Shure SM57 has a low output, so it’s normal to open the gain that much I would say.
To my knowledge plug / unplug is ok with dynamic mics without phantom power. I definitely wouldn’t do it with condenser mics and activated phantom power.

Its normal. I am using an SM57 for silent recording two tube amps at volume levels of max 80 dBA.
As it has been mentioned already, this is a dynamic mic with low output.
There, I also need gain settings around 61 with 12Mic and with UFX III.
In contrast to that my two large condenser tube mics with their own tube preamp only need a gain of around 28 (the newer one) and 35 (the older one which is a little weaker).

Still the activated Inst option is wrong.

Does the instrument option affect also signals from the XLR input?
