Topic: Using Ada 8000 and understanding channels used by totalmix

Hi,
I really like the totalmix interface, but it is taking me a long time to understand it.
In my current project I am using a behringer ada 8000 with two optical cables in adat format
and rme babyface, the fireface usb settings in set on adat 96000 internal "adat sync 48 khz".

TASK ONE
I am trying to use the audio external effect in ableton live.
I am sending audio from ableton live to the output number 3 of ada8000 xlr to a mixer then alesis 3630 then back to the front panel ada8000 input number 4.

It took me two days to figure out this task, because the output number 3 in totalmix signal is actually on AS2, this
is very confusing to me, so even though I have it working for now, I would really like to know how to actually have the signal appear on ADAT 3, shouldn't this be the proper way it should work ? So if you could explain this, that would help me understand the logic behind total mix, and help me do it in a few minutes rather than days.

TASK TWO
In trying to understatnd the totalmix naming,
the software playback row has on my setup an 1/2 ph 3 ph4 as 1/2 adat 3 adat 4 (on the bottom part),
I don't understand why ableton live would have the name of the totalmix outputs,
and I don't think I can access these ports inside ableton live.
I'm also confused when you click on that name there is a list with the same items with a little tick,
can you tell me how to use this

I have another question
my audio signal is returning from mixer and alesis to the input number 4 of ada8000 shouldn't that signal appear in totalmix ?
there is nothing there

-ADA8000 supports 44,1 and 48kHz sample rates only, so switch your project/babyface to those sample rates first, and make sure you’ve set the sync dip switch in the back of ADA8000 to ”adat in/slave”.

-Each harware output (bottom row in totalmix) of your babyface has its own mix in totalmix. Once you realize that, routing gets much easier. You should learn to use Totalmix FX first. It’s very powerful, and there are lots of tutorials available. Just click on different outputs in totalmix, and you can see that the whole mix changes.

-Middle row are the software outputs that you select in ableton. You can still choose to route and mix them freely to any physical output of your interface (xlr, phones, adat, etc) using Totalmix. If you feel lazy, it’s possible to use your daw for routing and bypass totalmix altogether by enabling daw mode in totalmix fx. However, I don’t recommend that, as totalmix is a lot more flexible once you get the idea. And honestly, it’s not that hard to grasp.

Ok I was wondering about the 48 khz, when I use 96 totalmix displays less tracks, so I thought this was normal and ok, also the sound coming out with this setup sounds perfect !

I am getting some feedback from a gate plugin in ableton live when I click on the little blue headphone to preview the gate sound,
I did see that totalmix was using software playback PH3 and PH4, is this feedbacking in ableton now?

I remember this isssue with an ADA8200, the inputs are shiftet 2 steps in Totalmix.
Ada8200 input 1 arrived Totalmix on input 3 and so on.
It's how it is and you have to keep this in mind.

Ableton has no names from your Totalmix, that's normal.
The DAW connects to channels 1 to 12, in Totalmix Babyface channels 1 to 4 are analog and channels 4 to 12 are the digitals Adat.

ok I understand the way ableton is assigning the channels it finds,
I just switched to 48 khz and now I got it working but I had to change audio soundcard in ableton live to another one and then come back to my rme babyface to get some issue solved when switching to 48 hz and then I had to do some adjustments in total mix to get the sound back, now it is working again (thanks to your advice i'm making progress!)
but I'm still a little confused with the assignement again,
now in ableton live there is channel 1 and 7 for the audio from in the external audio effect (audio to stays on 3 like before)
and an1 and adat 4 (this on is good) in totalmix.

The input channels in Totalmix providing the signals directly into Ableton input channels 1 by 1, correct ?
The input numbers on the Ada8000 unit are shifted 2 numbers up in Totalmix, correct ?

yes you are right they assign next to each other,
I was just confused whay the hardware inputs shows signal on the first an1 track when my ada8000 has only output 3 sending audio, but I just saw it was the AN1 of a extra cable In another setup still making a direct connection from my mixer to rme babyface input 1.
So now it is working and I am much more confident with totalmix and the handshake with ableton live.
The only bad news for today is I went from 96 khz to 48 khz, but that's the way it is.
Still sounding great

Yes the Ada8000 is a 48kHz device, I'm not sure how Ableton handle this but may be you can switch back to 96kHz later when all recordings are done and the Ada8000 no longer need to be active in the setup ?
