Topic: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Hello,

Behringer ADA8200 connected to RME Fireface UCX II via ADAT in + ADAT out

I'm having random Clicks,Pops & Distortion, all comes from Inputs of the ADA8200

I suspect from internet search to first try and buy 'not cheap' ADAT optical cables and try again - i will update if it helps.
At the moment i use , 1 TOSLink cable from the RME Box & 1 good TOSLINK cable (which i know its work)

I dont think its a USB/RMEz problem cause even when its disconnected from PC its still does the same regard the meters in TotalMix

Here's a video of what is happening :

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Do you know that the two devices need to be clock synchronized?

Assuming UCX II is the master, did you set the ADA8200 to be the slave?
There are DIP switches at the back of the ADA8200 for this purpose.

Important is, that the TOSLINK cable is plugged from an output of the master to an input of the slave.
Clock signal can (of course) only be sent through an ADAT output and received by an ADAT input.

Do you see on the optical input the status "Sync"?
Please post a screenshot of the driver setting window (input status).

Thank you for your answer,
Sorry that i did not mention

UCX II set to Internal [master]
ADA8200 set to ADAT IN [slave]

also i did not mention that i updated last FW also.

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Sorry, no idea, might be Apple related.

On the UCX II you could check the TOSLINK cables and ADAT I/O ports by plugging a loop and
watch whether it locks and synchronizes and stays stable synched.

I don’t think so:

On the way to rule things out I would try:
- disconnecting the ADAT cable from ADA8200 out to UCX II input
- disconnecting the other cable and set ADA as master
- ADA as master with both cables connected
- sample rate 48kHz combined with every of the three options above
- use of an additional word clock bnc cable

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Thanks for your replies again.
I have figured out the problem finally!

I will share it here if maybe someone will tackle this in his life, since i did not found anything on the internet.

Problem was indeed 'Sync' issues
I am using Macbook
I did not change any TOSlink cables.
I had a driver under ' Audio Midi Devices' in Mac called 'Soundflower' which i installed few years ago.
'Soundflower' helping recording the PC sound ( like LoopBack from RME )
'Soundflower' was disabled but seating there quietly configured to 48K with no option to change that.
I have deleted the Driver manually from " /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/
Restarted the Mac and finally Sync is 100%, no more clicks and pops.

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Glad to hear you solved it.
But this here makes no sense then:

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

I am sorry, but i was testing it again.
everything was working good for 10-20min
and now its again Clicking,Poping,Distorting Random meters bump on all ADAT inputs/outputs

Any suggestions ?

'Sync' keep changing between lock and sync [ LED blinking on UCX II ]

That sounds like defective unit.
To get a better view on this, the random meter bumps is in Totalmix, right ?
And when everything is disconnected from the UCX, only USB connection to the computer, the Adat channels in Totalmix still go crazy ?

True.
Also, when only ADAT connected and USB is not connected, still meters going crazy both in TotalMix and of course at the LED of the UCXII

I feel so lost with this, can’t record normal
Tons of clicks and pops.

Totalmix version ?
Driver version ?

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Firmware v43
Driver 3.221

TotalMix I will check

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Driver 331 is the actual one you should try

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Updated to v3.223
same issue sad

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

No Adat cables are connected but there is signals on the Adat inputs visible on the display ?
This means there is something wrong with the unit.
I think it's time to contact the RME support :

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

It’s only when both ADAT cables are connected (in>out.  out>in)

Again my suggestion to rule things out as written above in post #5

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

I bought a new TOSlink cable, ill check it later and update here again.
I have already tried to put UCX on slave via Optic out and ADA as master both 44 & 48 [ same problem ]

...via optic out... wrong !

You have to connect optic input from ADA optical output to get this working.
UCX clock-mode external optical Adat input.
ADA clock-mode master
1 toslink cable from ADA OUT to UCX IN

I think we missunderstand
by Optic Out i mean the 'settings' in RME Driver that switches between SPDIF & ADAT
Check screenshot https://ibb.co/hYD8sZs

It seems pointless to connect only 1 TOSlink cable between ADA and UCXII
In this way i will still achieve 8 Outputs & 8 Inputs ? or just 8 inputs ?

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

1 cable = only 8 inputs.
you can connect 2 cables, no problem.
When the ADA is set to master, wich is good, then you have to change this "internal" to "external" in the UCX settings.

Exactly.
That's what i was doing <3

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

UPDATE
I have tried new cable ( only 1 cable )
still same issue Meters going crazy in adat input

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

And you also tried sync the other way around ?
internal in the UCX settings and Slave Adat IN at the ADA ?
Also please perform the test from post 4

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Tried all the methods beside BNC cable which I don’t own

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

What did the loopback cable test showed ? Level meters lightshow on all inputs ?

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Yeah, Same issue when trying loop back way.

I tried all 5 methods in comment #5

also bought a BNC cable which also brings the same problem
- all cables are good for 100% sure
- BNC did not help
- ADA as master ( only 1 cable - same issue )
- ADA as master ( 2 cables - same issue )
- ADA as slave (2 cables ofcourse same issue )
- ADA as WC IN ( same issue )

Im losing my mind and start thinking the ADA8200 is defected sad
i read so much good reviews about ADA8200, seems like i should have not gone with Behringer and buy a Stand-Alone RME old Interface or something.

Any ideas ?

I don’t understand how this two sentences go together.
The issue is still there when you do a direct cable loop on the UCX II and without the ADA involved, but you think, the ADA is defected?

Sorry for misunderstanding again, I ment loop back with the ADA IN to OUT
Well, I have taken my UCX to RME distribution in my country, checked the UCX with same Toslink cables and with different pre-amps all was syncing fine with the UCX
when ADA was involved the problem went back, so it’s 100% faulted ADA ADAT OUT Port am I right ?
And it seems like I’m the only one that ever happend to him, cause there are a lot of good reviews on the ADA

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Sorry to hear. But at least the UCX II fine!
Maybe you can give / send back the ADA?
I have one of the older models, ADA8000 with Black Lion Audio mod. All fine so far. Maybe you can find a second hand 8-ch. preamp/converter somewhere to replace the ADA8200…

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Second hand .. I will try to text the seller
The question now what alternatives do I have ? for ADAT 8 in/out
Not sure if to buy new ADA8200 due to this problem even tho I reallly liked the Midas pre amps together with SoundCraft pre amps sound
Maybe get an audio interface and use as a stand alone ?

Re: Pops,Clicks and Distortion from UCX II ADAT

Personally, I don’t recommend audio interfaces in standalone mode. Many of them (like RME ones) have to be configured first. Of course that can work well and it’s a very nice feature, but it’s more complicated than using a 'real' preamp / ADAT converter. MOTU 8pre is the only exception I know. There are many nice units on the (2nd hand) market (of course also theRME Octamic).

What ? You connected a toslink cable on the Ada output and to the Ada input ?
That's not true !
Where is then the connection to the UCX ?
The cable.loopback test is to do on the UCX and with Totalmix.
Send a signal to an Adat output in Totalmix and on the UCX is the cable from Adat output to Adat input.
Is the signal arriving in Totalmix proper without any other channals having level meters mystery ?
Is the lock stable in the Fireface settings dialog ?

You reported the unit was tested by service partner and is working fine, all right, then the loopback test is no longer need.

On the ADA was the phantom power ON or OFF ?
Try with phantom power off.
