Topic: Connect Total Mix to Total Mix Remote via USB - possible?

Hello,

I am a happy owner and user of an UCX ii.

I started using Total Mix Remote on an I-Pad to control Total Mix on my Mac. It works fine with WI-FI connection.

However, in some places where I will perform there will not be an WI-FI connection.

I use the Mac and the I-Pad next to one another when performing (Mac for DAW and I-Pad for mixing).

It would be very useful for my setup if it was possible to connect Total Mix Remote to the Mac via USB. Is there a way to do this?

Both Mac and I-Pad are from 2021 and use USB-C ports.

Thank you,

José

Should be no problem.
I assume its a "normal" iPad?
Just connect the iPad with Standard USB-C to your Mac as you would charge it.
Accept all "Allow" Popups.
On Mac in Settings - General - Sharing - Internet Sharing -> click on the "i" icon.
You should see sth like "iPad USB".
If you really want a 1-2-1 Connection, select "iPad USB" as Source and "iPad USB" as destination. You can also leave the Source as it is, too. Enable the sharing.
Check your Firewall is not blocking sth...
You should now see in Totalmix 1 or 2 addresses (depending on the source you selected above). The USB Address should look like 192.168.2.1...

You can also create an AdHoc Wifi Connection, but USB should be more stable.

Re: Connect Total Mix to Total Mix Remote via USB - possible?

thank you Maggie!

unfortunately it doesnt work.I dont get an "IPad USB" option

when i click the "i" it says i can share:

From:

ethernet adaptor (en4, en5, en6)
thunderbolt bridge
Wi-Fi

To:

ethernet adaptor (en4, en5, en6)
thunderbolt bridge

Also I couldnt create an AdHoc Wifi Connection, no option to "create network" (like it used to in my older mac when clicking the Wi-Fi icon)  showing up even after activating "show legacy network and options"

will keep investigating tomorrow

thanks again for your help

José

Re: Connect Total Mix to Total Mix Remote via USB - possible?

Which ipad model? with cellular option? which macOS version? does your ipad charge if you plug it in to mac?

Sorry, i have to correct myself. AdHoc was a wrong term. I rather meant "Internet Sharing" by crating an AccessPoint.

Background:
AdHoc = Accesspoint without any security (password, etc).
Apple has removed this due security reasons longer time ago. Although you can still crate an AdHoc by terminal commands, i would not recommend it, as it makes sense that apple kicked it away from GUIs. Thats why you do not find the Option anymore in the WIfi icon.

Anyhow, i would recommend the USB connection for your scenario (performing live?, etc...).

A reason, why you cannot see your iPad in the Internet Sharing settings could rely that the ipad is in "IDAM" Mode? (=connected via USB and activated as an Audio/Midi Interface in Apple Midi Setup)?? That would make sense.

Background: Apple restriction - Only either IDAM or Network via USB - never both at the same time.

Anyhow, if you need IDAM and you have the mobile data option, it is possible to use IDAM and Network for TM, as we have two different intefaces we can use to connect with the mac:
Create an AccessPoint on the iPad and connect from Macs Wifi to AP of the iPad (the other way, we tried before).

But all of this is just a guess for know, would help to know the details which Hardware/SW you use.

But, it is definetly possible. 100%. I use a similar setup from time to time, too.

Re: Connect Total Mix to Total Mix Remote via USB - possible?

Hello Maggie,

So it is an I-Pad 10th generation and the OS is 17.5.1. No SIM card option. yes, it charges when plugged to the Mac

The Mac is a MacBook Pro 2021 14 inch, M1 Pro chip and the OS is Sonoma 14.5

both OS are up to date

my priority for the moment is making TM Remote work via USB.

I will definitely use the I Pad soon as a midi controller, didnt do it yet, but will get into that when I have the time!

So if I understood correctly, TM Remote and midi controller simultaneously through USB is not possible?

thanks,

José

Re: Connect Total Mix to Total Mix Remote via USB - possible?

I am not Mac/iPad user, and never has been..... But that "thunderbolt bridge" maybe might work. Thunderbolt is just a better USB C. More or less.

Re: Connect Total Mix to Total Mix Remote via USB - possible?

No SIM card option.

That is the relevant thing... Without Cellular Option, the iPad (without jb-ing) has - afaik - no possibility to use its standard USB connection as a network(TCP/IP) port.

F. ex an iPhone (which always has cellular), should work, if you activate Hotspot and connect it to Mac via USB.
But i do not have such an iPad here.

Although it may be worth a try:
Close the Settings App on Mac.
Connect your iPad via USB.
Open Terminal and enter:

networksetup -detectnewhardware

Check the steps in my last post again...

Anyhow, you still have some possibilities:

1) Mac as WiFi AP
Select one of ethernet adapter (en4, en5, en6), thunderbolt bridge as source. In the sharing settings already mentioned.
The wifi should appear as destination. if you select it, you can enter the AP credentials etc...

2) Apple USB-C to Ethernet adapter (but as you have a Macbook with only TB Ports, so you would have to buy an additional sad )

Maybe there exists an Apple USB-C to TB Adapter, which is compatible to an iPad 10 and supports network (Dont know atm)?
I would call the Apple Service an tell them, that you need a wired Network(TCP/IP) connection between your iPad and your Mac...

TM Remote and midi controller simultaneously through USB is not possible?

No, its always possible.
1) If you - how ever connect your iPad through network, you can always activate MIDI Ports via "network midi" in Apple MIDI Setup App: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/a … ms1012/mac

2) MIDI trough USB is possible already now, if you just connect it (when it charges).
Go to Audio MIDI Setup app on Mac, open Audio Devices Window, and you should see your iPad. Activate it and you will get an additional MIDI (and Audio) Port. See: https://discussions.apple.com/content/a … 7d1517d75c
