Topic: Reel to reel clipping UFX III analog line inputs

I have my UFX III analog outputs running to my reel to reel. If I record so the meters are hitting 0 on the reel to reel (for better signal-to-noise ratio), the signal clips the UFX III line inputs. I have the gain set at 0 and the input set at +13 (the lowest option available).

Are there any TotalMix FX settings I can tweak so that I can hit the tape hard (for a better signal-to-noise ratio) from my DAW but avoid clipping when dumping back into ProTools?

If I record a low level signal to tape it won’t clip when I dump it back but the tape hiss is very loud.

Change the setting from +13 to +19 or even to +24 (I would select +24)

Oh my. Looks like I don’t have the correct understanding of how those work. I thought lower would be better. I will change them and report back!

That setting is like an information for the converter about how powerful the incoming signal is to expect.
Its not a gain staging number.
