Topic: UFX (1st Gen) + 12Mic - Aux Device Control

Hey all,

I'm fairly certain that there's no way but maybe someone has a creative solution :-P
I'm running the 1st Generation UFX (via USB), up to date on the most recent firmware and added a 12Mic (also on the latest firmware) recently. The 12Mic is connected to the UFX via 2 of its ADAT Outs and I'm using the RJ45 out to integrate it into my network for remote control (I'm a drummer recording myself mostly and I'm in the room next to where the interface is located).

I knew up front that I could use the RME Connector App or control it via the browser window which works perfectly fine.
I originally wanted to get a used Octamic XTC and use Aux Device Control to have everything with TotalMix FX but needed more Mic Preamps so the 12Mic it was.

Now that Aux Device Support was added with the 1.97 Beta of TotalMixFX, I was curious but as far as I can tell I'm SOL as the older UFX doesn't have MADI and the only way to control the 12Mic through TotalMix FX is MIDI over MADI.

Is there any way to get this to work using the USB Connection of the 12Mic and send the data controlling it through there?
When I open the Aux Device Options in TotalMix FX I can select the ADAT Channels (in banks of 4) and I can select different MIDI Inputs and Outputs (the two of the UFX as well as the Macs internal IAC driver), but so far nothings being sent in one direction or the other.

Thanks for any input on this smile
Moritz

Hi Moritz.

Welcome to the RME user forum.

It needs MIDI and this can be "MIDI" or alternatively "MIDI over MADI" if supported by the device.
Your UFX has 2x MIDI I/O ... use one of those.

MIDI over MADI gives you the additional advantage that you do not need separate MIDI cabling. The "virtual" MIDI over MADI cable (by using unused bits in the MADI protocol header) can be up to 2 km (in case of single mode even 10-20 km) long between each unit.

There is communication through USB possible but not for RME connector or Auxdevice. It is a special protocol as an Alternative to the access via LAN/Browser. I do not remember the name, but it is not necessary anyway, you can use LAN.

See this example for MADI, you need to translate it for your purpose to use ADAT.

My issue is the 12Mic doesn't have a MIDI Port so how can I route the MIDI Data to and from it if not via MIDI over MADI?

Sorry I forgot, I thought about the Octamic XTC which has.

Hmm, then also RME connector is not possible.

If RME has no other idea, then it looks to me like you need to upgrade to a MADI capable device -> UFX III.

Yeah that's what I arrived at after going through what I could find so far but didn't know the USB connection was "locked" to certain functions - I was hoping for some other way to get MIDI Data back and forth haha.

It's "just" a convenience thing for me - I don't need any of the newer UFXs other features and the entire process of selling my interface, getting the other one for a significantly higher price is not worth it in this case.

Thanks for you help though - much appreciated :-)

You can sell the UFX and still get a good price for it for cross financing the UFX III.
Between UFX and UFX III many improvements have been made which I think are worth it, same as MADI.

Check my blog article which lists improvements between UFX+ and UFX III

And here between UFX and UFX+:

Summarized here in this posting:

In total, plenty of improvements, and you can connect definitively more compared to ADAT and you could then also record easily even at double speed if you have a demand.
