Topic: UCXii + FF800 + durec questions

Hello all,

I am a long time Fireface 800 user but it’s time to move on from FireWire to USB.
I am thinking about buying a ucxii but continue using the FF800 as additional inputs outputs which will be fed to the ucxii via adat. I would be grateful to anyone who can give me opinion on the following:

1. Are the ucxii DAC converters better than the FF800 ones?

2. When using the ucxii standalone with direct usb recording (durec) will I be able to easily playback the recorded multitrack file? Or will I need to select stuff first, do a lot of settings before hitting play?

3. I am thinking of using the ucxii mostly standalone as a multitrack recorder. Will I be able to rename files without a computer? Or will I end up with a lot of files with generic names?

Thanks!

Re: UCXii + FF800 + durec questions

I would sell FF800 and buy UFX II. Then you have everything in one unit without the hassles of having to operate two units.
UFX II has now the same analog and digital board of UFX III.
Here a summary of improvements with the UFX III.

UFX II is the same unit as UFX III, except MADI/USB3 (the only difference).

Regarding converters, FF800 is from 2004, 20y ago.
The converters of UFX III and II are from the proven ADI-2 Pro FS.
Definitively faster most likely also quality as many people were extremely satisfied with ADI-2 Pro FS reference converters.
I never had any FF400 or FF800, so I can't tell.

Thanks for the response!.

Does anyone have input on the issue of playback of recorded material and the renaming of files? (Standalone mode)

Very good question but unfortunately at this time we can't rename recorded files via DURec in stand-alone mode ... except if RME change this ;-) ... Please!

And yes, playback is available for recorded files via DURec in stand-alone mode.

Re: UCXii + FF800 + durec questions

Thanks! I agree rename files will be useful

May I also ask: when playing back a recording do I have to select tracks first? Is it a quick procedure? How do I choose which tracks should play back from a multitrack recording?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you must select the track to play back first and yes, it's a veeeery easy, quick and intuitive procedure.

No reasons to worry, DURec automatically groups multitrack recordings into a single file, just select and play ... done!
