Topic: Set markers while recording via DURec

Hi

my use case is to record everything while in the studio and set markers at any time I want, so that I have quick access to it later.

The DURec feature is perfect for that. What I miss, is the possibility to set markers during recording, so that one does not have to listen through the complete recording when searching for parts of interest. Instead direkt navigation to markers would be possible.

I could imagine to use a connected MIDI controller for setting those markers (MIDI message configurable in Fireface device). The markers could be stored in the Cue chunk of the recorded RIFF/WAVE file. Feature should be accessible in standalone mode.

You can think of using this while playing a modular synth, a guitar or whatever you like. Whenever triggering the configured MIDI message via pedal or any MIDI controller you have, a marker would be set.

Any thoughts on that?

What is also possible as we did, hit with a drumstick three times onto the singers mic.
In the DAW zooming into the wave a little the three hits are visible and I know, there is it, the part before those hits is where the singer told me it's the best version, use this in the mix. No more need to listen 5 times the aweful song.

Your request with the marker is good, you could also just record a midi track and for every marker hit a chord on the keyboard with one hand. At least you have a visible thing at the right place. On top of that you can record little voice-memos on an additional audio track next to the midi notes (check timing of bass, or check singer with melodyne). Visible marker and voice marker. All doable with existing equipment.

@waedi thanks for your thoughts. All possible options. With a DAW running there are several options incl. setting markers in your project via e.g. MIDI. In FF's standalone mode you're a bit more limited.

I'm just thinking about making things clearly visible in a wav file's metadata. Would also be great for communication when exchanging recorded material. Kind of a formalism. Isn't this one purpose of a Cue chunk?

I also work with fieldrecorders. In these you have the option to set markers while recording.
