Topic: HDSPe AES multi-client asio question

This is my first foray into RME world.

I'd like to be able to use more ram in my Windows XP machine, but can't because critical plugins won't work in 64bit.  I use Reaper as a virtual instrument host and it works extremely well and I would like to continue using it.

With 8gig of Ram and running two instances of Reaper, can I tap into the second 4gigs while still running in 32bit (like in OSX?)  I'm able to load about 2.8gig of samples into one instance of Reaper (with 3/GB switch turned on).

Would the multi-client support provided by the HDSPe AES allow this to work reliably with low realtime latency (512 buffer max)?

Thanks!

Re: HDSPe AES multi-client asio question

Hi JFB,

There was a thread on the reaper forum http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=34860 about 64bit.

It appears you can install  x32 reaper and x64bit on the same machine. I couldn't see any comments about having 2 instances of 32 bit.

I don't think Windows handles memory management in the same-way as OSX.

http://jstuff.wordpress.com/ is a website that contains a program called jbridge  http://jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridge/  that  allows 32bit plugin on 64 bit daw

I'm a little out of my depth here / also not from RME. Hope some of it helps.

Re: HDSPe AES multi-client asio question

Hi JFB,
What are these plug ins that supposed do not work on Win7/Vista 64?

The JBridge software mentioned in the other post works great but like all the bridging software does not work with 100% of the plug ins.
But it does work with more plug ins than Steinberg and Cakewalks built-in Bridging hosts do. The developer much like Justin from Reaper is very responsive.
The vast majority of 32bit  plug ins will work fine in Vista 64 as a 32 bit plug in. The biggest ones to worry about are ones that use ILOK.
You will need to use the latest version of the plug in and update to the latest version of the ILOK drivers for it to work correctly on Vista 64.

What a coincidence - I logged on to report about this!  I just got finished installing this and with some preliminary tests, it works.  I haven't put it under any real-world load yet, but two instances of Reaper each running an instance of Kontakt with another track set up as a Reverb send on each so far works.

Now to put another 4GB of memory in the PC and check if each Reaper instance will use it's own "theoretical" 3.5gig of memory.

ChrisADK - thanks for the reply.  My Sony Oxford EQ is not 64bit compatible with no update available (or slated, even) from Sonnox.  The only reason for me to go 64bit is for more ram access for loading samples, but I can't live without the Oxford EQ.  I know 32bit apps work in 64bit OS, but it would be pointless to upgrade if I can't use the ram benefit.  As far as JBrigde goes, I read the manual for it and you have to engage some sort of "performance" mode for it to work well in realtime, but you have to incur another buffer's worth of latency, which I can't do.

Another question:  My current audio card is a Frontier Dakota (PCI) , which supports low latency handling.  I'm only using 4 channels (two for main, two for reverb send).  Would the considerably more up-to-date RME PCIe card perform any better in this regard?  My only use of this computer is intensive, realtime sample streaming. (Maybe an official RME person could also chime in? :-)

Thanks.
