Topic: New to DigiCheck nearly every professional song shows me clipping ,OVR

Hi

I know DigiCheck for a long time, but never really used it, cos I thought I cannot monitor the Audio Output under Mac OS X until I read the easy workaround to Loopback the output to an unused input. So since I know of that option I monitor every recording and every song that I play on my computer through RME DigiCheck (means: I look at the spectral analyser and Level Meters for clips etc.). So far so good.

Here?s my "problem" or question.

When I look at the meters while a professional Song is played after a short time the Level meter displays Clipping and Oversampling. Even in the TotalMix there is sometimes the message OVR. I mean I understand I could set more Samples than 3 for indicating me there?s OVR. But the default setting is 3 FS Samples for OVR.  I dont want to change that, besides someone explains me why I should enter more. And I understand that professional songs are mixed very very loud with less and less dynamics. (For example Californication from Red Hot chilli Peppers, besides it?s not reall my favorite music I cannot listen to it beacuse it clips all the time. I know that this album was discussed a lot in the context of the "loudness war"

But my question is why I get Oversampling at nearly every song. I understand why the level meter parks at 0 dB e.g. when I play the Californication album, but why do I get OVR ?

Oversampling isn't an "Over". It's a technique to show "Intersample Peaks". If you don't like it you can disable it.

Thanks for your answer! I?ve heard of intersmple peaks. But I could not explain what it exactly is. Could you give me an explanation, or do you know some good links where I can read about it?

Moreover is something wrong with my setup that it happens so often? Or is it normal with extremely compressed material like Californication from Red Hot Chilli Peppers?

Bad mastering/limiting.

Yeah I know, that?s what I first thought, too. But I got perplex because it is nearly at every song....

Californication is a perfect example of this practice.

With the right tools you can get "intersample peak free" files. Voxengo Elephant VST (at minimum 4x oversampling when working at 44.1kHz) for example does a nice job.

I know the Californication example. I still wonder why this OVR and intersampling occurs at nearly every production I listen to. Not only the Red Hot Chilli Peppers album, but all the music I got.

And I also have the Voexngo Elephant. But I never really dealt with it in this context, I just blow up my productions with it... Well I think I have to read and learn about intersampling.....
