Topic: What Notebook should I buy?

Hi,

I'm a ( really happy) fireface 400 owner since two years. I want to buy a powerful notebook to replace my old "workstation" and I don't want to deal with fw chipset issues or other technical laptop/drivers problems.

So what notebook should I buy? Something light (<2,5kg) and small (screen size : 13-14")

I'm thinking about the new Vaio Z with Core i5/7, which is light and seems to be powerfull. Any issue with this Laptop?

Thanks.

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

yes it has issues as do most laptops for firewire

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

I just came back from a recording session, where I did 21 tracks at once for over three hours with the one in my sig ;-)

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

Thanks for the answers and the suggestion. The laptop in your sig is quite impressive but I'm looking for something smaller.

Do you have a suggestion for a 13" ou 14" notebook?

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

If the FW chipset is from JMicron I don't think it will work well :-(

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

Why do you say that the FW chipset is a jMicron? Is It something you know?

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

From ADK website : "All our laptops have Native Texas Instruments Firewire Chipset, by using an add-in Express card with TI firewire."

The laptop from clevo  : 2 Ports iEEE1394 ExpressCard Texas Instruments (+ intel bus)

> Is there something I don't understand? You're talkin' about a "native" fw chipset on the laptop? I don't think it have one, but I'm not a hardware specialist, I might be wrong ;-)

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

I own an ADK laptop. In my opinion, they are cream of the crop. I only hope they are still around when I purchase my next laptop.

They should put you in a glass jar.

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

Ok, "ADK, ADK, ADK". It's a bit strange that RME let you guys from ADK do your commercial things on this forum. It's a little bit disappointing. One "ADK" answer, ok, no problem, but when I said "do you have OTHER SUGGESTIONS, 'cause I'd like to purchase a 13"/14" laptop", I got "ADK" again. So please ADK people : I won't buy an ADK laptop I want a 13/14" screen size laptop.

Is there someone here who doesn't work with ADK ?

You're right, missed that one.

There's a lot information HERE

And I don't work for Scott btw, travelling a few thousand miles a day is a bit to much:-)

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

ADK don't actively advertise their computers here. The two comments were from (apparently satisfied) users of ADK laptops, not from ADK directly. This is called recommendation, not advertisement...

The choice is yours, of course. That said, the entire discussion is a bit off-topic here...

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

Daniel,

Please read all my posts, I don't think I'm the one who's taking the discussion off-topic...

so what 13" or 14" laptop, in your opinion, should I buy? To work with my fireface 400 (and Samplitude)? The laptop has to be a PC btw...

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

My point was that the entire "what laptop" subject is OT on this forum. Better try it here: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/

I have no specific recommendation, apart from buying from specialised audio computer shops rather than off-the-shelf mass-produced laptops with great specs on paper, but cheap FW chipsets etc...
One example of such a specialised retailer is... well, I guess you know. :-?

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

Thanks. Any other audio computer specialist? I'm looking for an European seller.

But maybe you've got only one suggestion...and I'll know why ;-)

Re: What Notebook should I buy?

I know a few in Germany... I believe there is one in the UK, too... Tried Google?

Yes I tried Google. Can you give me the ones you're thinking about?

Thanks

Musikcomputer.de
Audiozapp (Future Media)
Steller Online
Digital Audio Service

There may be others. Just a few that come to mind, in no particular order.
