Topic: Question: advantages of set-up using RME products only

Hi.

I'm a master course student, studying multi-channel loudspeaker array system for sound field control.
We implemented 32ch system, using RME MADIface, ADI 648, ADI 8 DS.
We use all from RME.

I'd like to know advantages for using REM products only, for example not including converters made by other company.
Is it good for latency or synchronization?

I doubt that latency is an issue in such a project. But keeping the analog outputs time-aligned is really difficult (maybe impossible for this project) if you use converters of different brands, and even when using different converters from one brand. Another strong point for RME is the ability to remote control all units, even if it only means having a central surveillance.

We need to measure input signals and pressure signals at any control region for using our suggested control method.
That is, we measure transfer function of our system.
But we can not measure input signals which generated by program, just we can get them from output ports of converters. So, we assume that there is no time delay between audio signals and output signals of converters. or we want to reduce the latency to satisfy this assumption.
That is the reason why I want to know about latency issue when we implement audio interface and converters from same RME products.

And I have one more question about ADI 648.
I know that ADAT supports up to 8 ch, 48 kHz, 24 bit.
But when we use MADI for 32 ch, 96 kHz, 24 bit, and, we want to convert MADI to ADAT, in this case, sampling rate is not matched.
I'd like to know how to treat this sampling rate problem.

PS: when we set up our 32ch system, M-32DA did not come into the market.
So, we use MADIface - ADI 648 - ADI 8DS. So We have to check sampling rate, bit, clock, etc.

We use one ADI 648 and four ADI 8DS for implementation of 32ch loudspeaker system.
When we use MADI signal for 32ch/96kHz, ADI 648 cannot convert MADI to ADAT (96kHz) without using S/MUX.
Because we don't have enough channels, we cannot use S/MUX.

In this case, should we use MADI signal with 48kHz sampling rate?
There is no way to keep 96kHz sampling rate without S/MUX?

I still don't get the point. The 648 has 8 x 4 channels = 32 channels output at 96 kHz. You just use two cables per ADI-8 DS, so still use 4 ADI-8 DS for 32 channels 96 kHz...

When ADI 648 converts MADI to ADAT, sampling rate should be up to 48 kHz because ADAT supports up to 48 kHz.
It means that, we can not use 96 kHz sampling rate when we use 648 for 32 ch.

I'd like to know a way to use 96 kHz sampling rate when we use 648 for 32 ch (except to use S/MUX).

There is no other way to use the 648 at 96k - it only works with SMUX on the ADAT side. Even the number of MADI channels will be reduced to 32.

Finally, sampling rate is constraint to maximum 48 kHz with 648.
and the only way is to use S/MUX..

No, that is not correct... The ADI-648 supports 96k operation with both MADI and ADAT.
I don't quite understand why you say "we cannot use S/MUX"...

Sorry, It is just in our case.
We don't have enough channel to use S/MUX for 32ch, because we have just four ADI-8DS devices.
Is it right?: In order to use 96 kHz by S/MUX, 16ch is available in our case.
But, for 48 kHz all 32ch is available.

No, this is not true. The ADi-8 DS has two ADAT ports for input AND two ADAT ports for output, so you can always use the full 8 channels per unit, also in 96k mode with S/MUX. So no problems with 32 channels @ 96K.

I guess everything should be fine now...
