We use RME products for acoustical experiment. (generating or reproducing sound field)

When we use RME converters, what kind of signal is the clock signal for synchronization using INPUT?
For example, square wave signal is used for Word clock.
But, I know that slave devices can extract the clock signal from digital signal (MADI, ADAT...), when we take INPUT for synchronization.
In this case, the clock signal is also square wave signal, or other kind of signal?
