Topic: HDSP 9652 & Multiface

Will I be able to connect a Multiface I with an HDSP 9652 card to increase my channel count?

Yes, with an RME HDSP or HDSPe interface card for the MF - not directly.

Thanks Daniel.  Do I sync them with the word clock connections?

Is there no way to sync these two cards internally?

Thanks again.

Re: HDSP 9652 & Multiface

No, but you can use WC adat or spdif. Adat is best AFAIK.

Re: HDSP 9652 & Multiface

So, even if the two cards are not connected, the ADAT lightpipe from different AD/DA converters will be in sync?  I didn't know it could be so easy.

Not quite that easy.  You'll still need some form of sync refererence across cards and/or across converters depending on your exact topology.  The clocks in all devices need to be referenced to a common clock SOMEWHERE in the chain.  Not tough by any means, but all of the available options (and which one is likely to be most stable/lowest jitter/most convenient) can be easily obfuscated for those new to Digital Audio.

If you set one card to master and the other to slave to adat.

Re: HDSP 9652 & Multiface

What I'd like to do is connect the 2 PCI cards internally.
There are connections labeled "Sync 1" and "Sync 2".
Can I use these to sync the two cards?
If so, where can I get a cable to connect them?
If not, what are they used for?

Re: HDSP 9652 & Multiface

I don't believe the MF HDSP PCI card's "SYNC" connectors have any end-user functionality.  I'd just use BNC and be done with it as not to waste an ADAT connection for sync-only purposes.  At least link the 2 cards over BNC, and then configure the Master/Slave topology appropriately across devices to re-distribute the clock via ADAT - or use a BNC "Tee" Loop to all devices which can be preferable.  You could also sync over SPDIF Coax to avoid eating up any ADAT I/O (if you don't have any BNC cables handy), but you are still using a pair of SPDIF I/O's for nothing other than sync.  BNC Sync doesn't "waste" any valuable audio I/O, and the video-bandwidth spec of most BNC cables (especially HD-SDI rated BNC cable) generally works very well for wordclock sync (and remains "on the cheap")...

Bottom line - You'll need to link the MF-I's clock (and/or the AD/DA's it is feeding) to the 9652's clock (and/or the AD/DA's it is feeding).  You'll have to "cross streams" ( wink ) at some point.

Re: HDSP 9652 & Multiface

Thank you for the specifics Randy.  I'll pick up some BNC stuff and run the tests.
