Topic: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Hi,

Last week I had a new (silver) Babyface delivered. The below steps are from the first time installation.

All steps were taken as per the manual and readme files on the driver disk: -

- First USB plugin of unit
- Installed driver (from the supplied driver disk) and all appeared well after a system reboot (all lights on)
- fut_usb.exe was run to check firmware (as located in the FUT_USB folder on the driver disk)
- firmware update showed that a newer version was available
- clicked 'update'
- firmware update then showed 'verified failure: 404 errors'(?)
- after reboot of unit and system; no lights show on unit
- different USB port tried; no lights show on unit
- different computer tried; no lights show on unit

The unit was sent back to my supplier. I have a replacement unit coming next week. The reason I'm messaging here is that I don't want it to happen again.

Was something done incorrectly?

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Never use drivers or firmware from a driver CD, they are always outdated. Download them from our website. Especially the firmware update tool. BTW, can you remember which version was shown? All shipping units should have the latest firmware version, so I am a bit astonished that it said 'not up to date'.

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Have the same Babyface silver editon with firmware 173, and I've read "no update". But in readme file I saw that it is possible update to 176. Drivers installed from original CD driver . Should I update firmware in case- maybe something wrong with the program "flash update"? What should do Babyface users?

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Please download always the latest flash update tool (and drivers) from the website: https://archiv.rme-audio.de/downloads.p … _driver_uc

The latest firmware for the Babyface is 176. I ´ve just flashed one Babyface with this file: as usual no problem.

best regards
Knut

The new unit came through today - the new driver and TM installed from the site with no problem. .

The settings are reading hardware revision 176, so I guess no need to flash it right now.

In regard to the previous; I didn't make a note about which versions it stated, however it was around 3-4 versions behind the version it said was the latest.

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Hi,

I think I have got same problem like Ventai.

1)I tried babyface a computer of my frend and it's ok. and updated the firmware.
2)Then i tried on my computer. Installation went good and restarted my computer.
3)After restarting computer Babyface has a loud and distorted sound like faulty grounding sound.
4) And I tried to flash the firmware it get a crash and after a crash again.
5) Restarted computer and Babyface gone. Only ADAT output ligth coming from card.
6) Tried different USB port and different computer. Result is same.

I'm in Turkey and bought it from Germany.
If I send back to dealer I'll lose another month for repair.
If there any solution without sending back the unit to dealer please let me know.

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Updated driver installed from site only. I'm aware of the problem due to this topic

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Did you use the fut from the site or from the CD?

Yes, I've used fut from site only.

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Am I have to send Babyface to dealer or should I wait for a solution from RME team?

What do you suggest?

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

The solution is to send back the unit to the dealer. And next time not to flash a unit (4) when it had been flashed successfully before (1), and is connected via a  broken USB connection (3).

Hi,

The same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago..

-Checked firmware with fut_usb.exe from website and latest downloadable version was v176
-My unit showed v172 installed + and error message below 'Fallback error'
-So with the fault showing and out of date firmware I updated
-When the progress bar has finished it also displayed 'verified failure: 404 errors'
and then the unit was dead, no lights, no sound, nothing.

I contacted RME who forwarded my email to Synthax (UK Distribution)
They were very helpful and replaced my babyface very promptly

What should of been a straight forward task, so I dont feel confident in future firmware updates unless I have an RME guarantee they will replace again if it fails.

Hope this helps

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

How about add "reset to factory defaults" to Babyface like Fireface UC? I don't know if it's possible with future firmware update.

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Same problem with my Babyface. While updating to Version 179 (31.3.) the software shows a error message and asked me to restart the adapter. After that no LED/Power. The "emergency-bios" doesn't work as discribed in manual sad

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

How can i activate the security bios at the rme babyface?

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

You can't. Please return the unit.

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

RME should correct the Manual and Readme Files of the Bios-Update:

When the update fails (status: failure), the unit's second BIOS will be used from the next cold boot on (Secure BIOS Technology). Therefore the unit stays fully functional. The flash process should then be tried again on a different computer.

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

The BIOS update works exactly that way. Except for a unit where the fallback flash is broken, which obviously was the case with your unit.

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Is this a problem that only affects the silver edition of the babyface?

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Hi there,

I started this thread some time ago. I've just updated to the latest driver, and now I want to flash to the latest firmware.

I ran the flash tool, and saw a message that caused some alarm:-

--------------------
New Revision: 179

Current Revision: 176

Programming Status: Fallback corrupt, please reprogram
-------------------------

The progress bar is not moving below this message.

Does this mean that the unit is damaged again?

Ok - do you mean it should be fine?

Thanks

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

No, MC was trying to say that you are using an outdated flash tool.

Right, well that's the one I downloaded from the RME driver page:-

http://www.rme-audio.de/en_downloads.ph … _driver_uc

--------------------------------------
Windows Flash Update Tool for Fireface UFX, UC, Babyface. Update to firmware revision UFX: 342/112/336, UC: 112, Babyface: 179.    03/31/2011    fut_usb_win.zip
----------------------------------------

Where can I get the new one?

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

Version 179 is the latest released firmware for the Babyface. A test version (fut RC2) with firmware 184 can be downloaded from the Release Candidate topic in this forum.

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

hi - also getting the 'fallback corrupt, please reprogram' using fut_usb

does this mean the firmware on the unit cannot be upgraded - even in the future?
or that it could go wrong (404 error) or could work fine ... roll the dice  : )
i am on firmware vers. 176 , latest drivers, totalmix etc - all working fine

is there any vital need to upgrade to the latest firmware version, or can i stay on 176 forever?

Re: No power / lights on Babyface (silver) after firmware update

You should update - but doing it when you have prepared for some days without it. I expect the new FUT to 'repair' your unit. But I can't completely rule out that the flash inside is broken somehow and the error stays. In that case you better get it repaired as long as it is still under warranty.
