Topic: RayDat shows only 20 channels at 96KHz, and 12 at 192KHz

Hi,

If I set the card internal clock to:

  • 32 to 48KHz, the card has 36 in/out. Fine.

  • 64 to 96KHz, the card has 20 in/out!

  • 128 to 192KHz, the card has 12 in/out!

When in/out are missing, they miss in HDSPmixer as well as jack, but are still visible in alsamixer (which doesn't mean that they work...)
It seems to me that the ones missing are ADAT because SPDIF always works as the last input (35-36, 19-20, and 11-12)
So that would mean 2 ADAT at 96KHz, and 1 ADAT at 192KHz, instead of 4 ADAT at 44.1KHz.

Please, anyone has an idea or anything that I could experiment?
I bought this as a first card to test and I can't buy the other cards because I'm not sure this is gonna work.

Doing some maths:

Adat is 8 Channels at 48, so 4 x 8 + 2(AES) + 2(Spdif) = 32
            4 channels at 96, so 4 x 4 + 2 + 2 is = 20
            2 Channels at 192, so 4 x 2 + 2 + 2 = 12.

I would say, everything is fine.

oh Gosh... you mean that ADAT in itself, by definition, is "8 channels only at 48KHz", and not at 96KHz ?
I thought ADAT was 8 channels period.
I was very ignorant! smile
ADAT is such a waste of fiber then, because technically, so much more could be handled.

ADAT is old, very old. Technology is progressing, at least sometimes, so yes, today lightpipe can handle more data than adat.
But luckily, Smux was invented even if it is waste of fiber in your eyes. The only problem is the choice of converters which handle Smux without losing half of the channels. These are Apogee AD/DA16, ofcourse the RME ADI8DS and the old Focusrite Pro26, which all have two adat-ports for 8 Channels.

Oh right, the Apogee DA/AD16!
So if I run at 96KHz, the DA16 will have only 4 analog outputs per ADAT? (8 of the 16 total)

Yes, it will only have 4 analog outs per adat at 96k, but as you have 4 Adat-Ports you have all 16 channels available.
What I wanted to say is that most of the 8-Channel Adat Converters are 96k-capable, but as they have only one adat-port you lose half of your converters. I hope its clear now.
