Topic: HDSPe MADI FX - Orion - Mothership

Hello,

Until today I've been successfully running my studio with a MADI Ring (MADI Card -> Antelope Orion -> Burl Mothership).
I use the Orion to feed my control room and the mothership for summing send and the stereo return.
As I'm expanding my studio I saw the need for hardware inserts. I figured it should be possible to route a round trip from output to input via the orion and stick a patch bay in-between. I set everything up, and am sending and receiving signal from the orion - but it won't show up in TotalMix (And therefor no signal in protools). The Orion is still sending out to the control room - and the mothership is still converting both ways.

My question is: What am I doing wrong? I've gone through the signal chain and routing on the Orion and in Totalmix - and now I'm more confused then ever.

More about my setup:

Mac Pro running 10.8.5
Pro Tools 10 (Native) (Using the Insert I/O in this case)
Newest firmware (as far as I can tell) for TotalMix and the Orion

I do seem to have trouble figuring out channel assignments between the converters (and I'm not so willing to go against the MS manual, which asks not to assign more channels than available. . .)

During testing I ran everything on 44.1kHz, 24bit - And the mothership is clock master - All devices lock perfectly

- The MS has 24 channels DA and 4 channels AD
- The Orion has 16 channels DA and 8 AD (Atleast with the setup I'm trying out - if I get it to work)

I'm not sure if it's a problem with the MADI card - but I've asked around and no one seems to know a solution.

Any help - or suggestions are more than welcome!
Thanks

Re: HDSPe MADI FX - Orion - Mothership

Is the signal absent in TM only, or does the settings window also show "No Lock"?

Re: HDSPe MADI FX - Orion - Mothership

Only absent in TM - But it is locked (Clocked via Madi 1 with MS as master)

Re: HDSPe MADI FX - Orion - Mothership

Then you'd need to check the configuration of the external device...

Re: HDSPe MADI FX - Orion - Mothership

Try toggling the madi SMUX setting in the orion setup preferences. There is a tab up on the right hand corner. It usually only makes a diference at higher sample rates but I've found it doesn't behave as suspected so could be worth a try.

cheers Greg

Re: HDSPe MADI FX - Orion - Mothership

Thanks for the tip - sadly I still haven't gotten it to work right. I've now done a complete new I/O setup in PT total mix and the orion interface. I'll see if antelope has some suggestions.

Hey there. I have a Mothership and and Orion as well. Running mac os 10.9.4
Not sure what's going on with your setup but I thought I should reach out to you
since I have almost the exact same rig.

Best,

Hi J.P.,

Mind going through your setup? Just got back to the studio and am taking everything apart again to troubleshoot.

I would appreciate it!

Thanks

Hi Soren,

sorry I missed your response. Did you ever get your setup running right?

Re: HDSPe MADI FX - Orion - Mothership

Yea - Like I thought it was a PEBCAK error. I was running ProTools 10 Native that has a 32 I/O limit. What threw me off was that I was at times running 34 I/O - but it seems never in parallel, since 4 of those channels where for reference material. . .

I decided to switch to Logic for now - still debating moving to another ProTools version that would support what I need - but I'm actually getting quite quick at editing in Logic, and enjoying some of the features. Mixing is pretty same same so I'm happy.

Anyways - Thanks for the support guys!
