Topic: Channels disposition in TotalMix (Micstasy and ADI-642)

Hello, I need help about channels order.

Setup:
8 ch. AES OUT preamp---------->ADI 642 for madi conversion------------>MICSTASY madi IN-------->HDSPE MADI (DAW)

In TotalMix I want the first 8 ch. of the ADI642 and the ch. from 9 to 16 of the Micstasy, but the Micstasy take always the first 8 channels. How Can I invert it?

I tried swapping (MICSTASY------->ADI642------>HDSPE MADI) but if I do this the Micstasy doesn't works.

Thanks in advance,

G.

Micstasy manual chapter 11.2 AutoID and 11.4 ID.

Re: Channels disposition in TotalMix (Micstasy and ADI-642)

Thank you Matthias.
A question about clock:

This is the setup:

8 ch preamp AES---->ADI-642 clock set to "AES"---->Micstasy clock set to "Option"---->HDSPE MADI clock set to "MADI".

In this case, is the clock generated from the 8 ch. AES preamp or is genearate from ADI-642?
ADI-642 takes the clock from the 8 ch. AES preamp and so generates a new madi clock?

Re: Channels disposition in TotalMix (Micstasy and ADI-642)

The clock source is the 8 ch preamp and everything syncs to it. SteadyClock just makes sure that even at the end, the HDSPe MADI, the clock is fresh and nearly jitter-free, similar to a direct connection 8 ch pre to HDSPe.

Re: Channels disposition in TotalMix (Micstasy and ADI-642)

So the 8 ch. AES preamp should be at the first place of the chain, because clock signal goes in only one direction. Is that correct?

8 ch. AES pream--->ADI-642---->Micstasy--->HDSPE MADI

not

Micstasy----->ADI-642 (with 8 ch. AES preamp.)----->HDSPE MADI

How can I use the clock signal of the Micstasy?

I also have an external clock geneator, but the 8 ch. AES preamp has only the word clock INPUT, (not OUTPUT). How can I send the external clock generator signal to the 8 ch. AES preamp (with 642)?
Can I use only the word clock input of the ADI-642 instead of the word clok input of the 8 ch. AES preamp?

Re: Channels disposition in TotalMix (Micstasy and ADI-642)

You can connect and set up the devices clocks completely independent from the  audio routing. But seeing your signal flow and the simple cabling with the (same) MADI clocks, why should you change it at all?

If you do, please refer to the respective manuals, it is all in there.

Re: Channels disposition in TotalMix (Micstasy and ADI-642)

Thank you.
I'm not sure about the clock quality of AES preamp. So if I use the external clock generator in this way:

Rosendahl CLOCK GENERATOR------>word clock IN 8 ch. AES preamp----->ADI-642 set clock source "AES"------>Micstasy clock set to OPTN (madi)---daw clock set to "Madi in"

the generator is the Rosendahl, but the MADI cable is used only for transport the clock. Therefore the ADI-642 can be used for transport an external clock signal to much distance, over the limits of the ext clock cable.

Re: Channels disposition in TotalMix (Micstasy and ADI-642)

The clock qualities don't matter because you have SteadyClock in all RME devices which takes care of that. Regarding the clock of the AES preamp: technically it will not improve anything feeding an external clock. Running that one on internal clock is the optimal way to operate.
