Topic: how to set up Total Mix?

I own a Fireface 800  ('older": http://www.rme-audio.de/en/products/fireface_800.php)

+ using on a Mac Book Pro OSX 10.8.2 + Ableton Live 9 + 2 Yamaha monitor speakers plugged in to Inputs and 2 in the back of the RME, I do have the latest drivers. I mostly record guitar, voice and bass (on Ableton) and I doubt I will ever take the RME to record a full band.

I cant fig out how to properly set up Total Mix to do this, can you pls help me understand? (manual and youtube videos are not clear to me).

-Plug in bass or guitar on any of the front inputs and hear them (without having to launch Ableton and arm a track)

-Listen to music on iTunes and other apps

-Have a bass lesson over Skype. This is tricky. My teacher needs to hear my voice and my bass.

-Hear my bass or guitar when connect to my Line 6 Pod.

Its very annoying to me to have to use the software mixer to control the master volume, the headphone volume or the volume of any of the scenarios above. Is there any hardware device I can buy to control master volume.

Right now I have the Total Mix like this:

Monitors Main: 3+4 (they are connected to 3 and 4 in the rear part of RME)
Monitor Phone: Phone

I have guitar in Input 9 front of RME, I can hear it in only Left monitor speaker. If I connect to channel 10 I can hear it on the right speaker only. I cant hear nothing if I connect on front input 1, 7 or 8.

Thanks

Seb

Are you using inputs 9-10 in stereo?
If you are using only input 9 you have to deselect the stereo button in the input settings of your channels 9-10.

If you want to use another input, in your control room, you have to click on you main outputs and then raise the faders of the channels that you want to use (for mono or stereo mode remember to use the stereo button).

Have you selected you Fireface 800 to be the main audio device of your computer?
Have you raised the fader of the software playback channels that you want to use?

Re: how to set up Total Mix?

-My Yamaha Monitor Speakers are connected to RME's back Outputs 1 + 2.
-Sound preferences for Mac are set to Fireface for both Input and Output

Heres a video screen capture I made. No sound. I couldnt capture both audio and screen. In the video, I did this in the following order:

https://youtu.be/Nls9SF2dgZ0

-?Strum guitar connected to front input 1 (high Z)  = can only be heard on right monitor....
-?Pick Bass, coming from Line 6 POD connected to front input 8.....? =  = can only be heard on left monitor....
-Pick bass coming from POD = I hear audio in both monitors when using Ableton and arming channel 8
-You Tube and iTunes video  = can be heard of both Left and Right monitors speakers

-? For a Skype guitar lesson, I would need to use a microphone connected to an input in RME right? (and headphones)

-? I assume I power down RME when not using. If so, when I boot it up, sometimes the Macs sound prefs revert to the Macs and on Ableton I always have to reset the Fireface as input and output. ....?
