Topic: Digiface PCI Interface, Win8.1: Problem after Power off

Hi,
I have a new workstation (Acer Verizon, i5, Win 8.1 Pro) and a PCI Interface for Digiface inside, latest firmware.

Basically it is running, however there is a strange problem:

After having shut down the computer completely (power off, no reboot) and starting the computer again, the Digiface will not be shown in the device manager, and its red light is on, no operation possible. After rebooting (Reboot command from Windows) it is found and runs as expected.
Digiface power supply is connected.

Of course it is not nice having to start the machine always twice this way...

Does anybody have an idea what's going on here?

I haven't found anything in the BIOS regarding PCI.

Thanks fort your help!
Ulrich

What's your PCI cards revision?

I've got the same issue with my PCI card, but am unable to repair the board myself. Having it done by RME/Synthax might be too costly?

Re: Digiface PCI Interface, Win8.1: Problem after Power off

That's interesting, thanks! However, my hardware revision is 1.9. I understand that 1.9 should not be affected by this boot/power supply problem, right?

I found a blue jumper labeled "BOOT" on the board and MC's explanation here in the forum:
https://www.forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopi … 219#p34219

"Blue Jumper
This is no internal input or output. The blue jumper allows you to change the card's power-on delay when booting the computer. Factory default is jumper in place. The FPGA of the HDSP 9632 (Edit: any PCI card with that jumper) will then be booted about 0.5 seconds after switching on the computer. This provides an effective way to get rid of problems caused by unstable power supplies in the moment of power-on. In case this delay will become a problem some day (very unlikely, and no system known so far), the jumper can be pulled. The delay is then reduced to 30 ms."

So how can I still improve the boot behaviour of my HDSP PCI interface card Rev. 1.9...?

So did you try without the jumper?

Re: Digiface PCI Interface, Win8.1: Problem after Power off

As far as I can see the jumper explanation recommends to not pull the jumper.

I would be gratefull for a comment from RME support on my problem. Thanks!

Please try it out in this case....

Re: Digiface PCI Interface, Win8.1: Problem after Power off

Ok, this was helpful indeed! Without the blue jumper it's working here - thanks for the advice!

(What is the technical reason for this behaviour? Maybe somebody can explain... curious...)

Re: Digiface PCI Interface, Win8.1: Problem after Power off

That is easy. With the jumper the computer boots faster then the card and for that reason doesn't see the card on cold boot. After a reboot the card is already running so is seen at boot.
So RME can now add to their instructions that they know of one MB that needs the jumper removed.
So with booting there are 2 issues possible. The card tries to boot before the power supply is stable and the card fails to boot (therefore the blue jumper) or the the card boots to slow and is booted later then the computer that it is in and the computer doesn't see it. Luckily RME had foresight and included both scenarios!!! It is my guess that most computers will work with and without the jumper. Only very fast booting computers or really slow PSU's will cause issues.
