Topic: Idea for TotalMix
Hi, here's an idea from my customer.

Most native DAWs have somewhat limited low latency when it comes to larger studio sessions with multiple musicians. Usually they have one stereo bus to do that. If you need to have several different feeds to the musicians, thats not enough. Especially if you do overdubs. Also, if you have Aviom type of listening mixers for the musicians, listening takes with the same personal mixes is a problem.
My idea is based on mmc messages most DAWs transmit. Play/record/stop, that is.
Based on the current Totalmix, there could be two ways to do this. The first would be better for the musicians, the latter perhaps a bit easier to make.
1. Totalmix has input channels and playback channels. Could the playback channels have a button, that do a couple of things? First, the channel listens to the mmc message coming from the DAW. If its play, its transmits the audio. If its record, it activates the mute. Second, it mirrors the settings of the corresponding input channel. Fader, pan, polarity, eq and dynamics. What you do in input, happens in playback as well.
2. The input channel of current UFX has a playback button for the Durec. Could the playback be possible from the DAW? Following the same mmc message logic. Would this be easier to make, than the first way? The only drawback with this one would be, that when in playback, the musician would not be able to hear himself. In overdubs this could be bad.
What do you think? Would this be doable? It would lift the usability of RME interfaces to the roof!
