Topic: TotalMix FX Mac/Win version 1.20 available as preview

Version 1.20 brings many small improvements, changes and also bugfixes. We were working on Windows, Mac and iPad at the same time, to update them all to a similar state. The usual list first:

- optimized reaction on stereo gain changes via ADM even if they don't arrive fully synchronized

- ADM: odd channels of a stereo pair were sometimes not set correctly when loading a snapshot

- optimized hardware output gain handling with BF, BF Pro and UC in combination with encoder operation

- selection dialog improved to prevent select-confirmation already on the first mouse click (example: Reverb - Type)

- the View Options panel can now be collapsed like all the other panels, thus getting more and flexible space, for example for the UFX with its DURec section

- as with the iPad app, the FX panel can now be opened by clicking on the round DSP meter. The View Options therefore can indeed stay closed after selection of the basic settings.

- changed behavior of the icon in the notification area: first click brings the window into the foreground instead of minimizing it

- many small code improvements and fixes for possible bugs and pitfalls

But the biggest change in TM FX 1.20 is the completely reworked FX section, Reverb and Echo! Unfortunately in this preview only users of Babyface and Babyface Pro are able to enjoy the improved sound quality, because all other units need a firmware update to be able to render the new routines on their DSP (this version is fully compatible, so can be used with other interfaces, but will not give a different reverb/echo effect there). Nevertheless we wanted to get some first feedback how the changes are seen by you, our users - even when we have to disappoint some who can not try it.

The changes in the FX section in detail:

- overall improved tonal character, density and fade out behaviour

- longer reverb time for all reverb types

- added 8 new reverb types with individual character and 'behaviour'

- improved operation of Smooth and High Cut controls

- some parameters are now saved during normal operation for every reverb type, so that comparison and set up is more easy when switching between them

- improved the sound when using reverb and echo simultaneously. Note that these operate in serial with the echo first, so it is possible to generate echoes that get reverb on them.

- added High Cut (HC) option to the echo effect for more natural sound or an intentional damping

- echo delay time is now shown in ms and BPM, and can also be given as BPM (double-click on lower value)

Here is a small description of the now available reverb types:

- Small, Medium and Large Room equal the former rooms 1 to 3, but can now have an upper limit of Room Size 3 instead of 2 (note that these sound not totally different to before - just a bit better ;-)

- Walls is the former Reverb type 4, but sounds quite different now

- Shorty provides a short, rich and warm reverb

- Attack slaps back to you

- Swagger enriches and blows up the original sound source. Attack and Swagger have a similar tonal character, which is quite different to the other reverb types

- Old school is just that

- Echoistic has a heavy echo part within the reverb sound which brings some nice stereo effect as well

- 8plus9 is a mixture of Old School and Echoistic

- Grand Wide is a dream when used with the right input signal and longer reverb time (Room Scale)

- Thicker can be used as short reverb to enrich the original signal

- Space has the most sizzle and longest reverb time of them all

Please note that all these reverb types are extremely flexible due to the available Smooth and Room Scale controls. This made it really hard for us to find good names describing them, because most of them can be used as short and long reverb, and sound totally different with Smooth turned to maximum or minimum.

TM FX 1.20 comes with adapted factory presets and default values for the reverb types to give a quick and fast setup time and quick results. But please take the time to play with them with different signals and different settings, to learn how great they are, and how they can be used in different ways.

Re: TotalMix FX Mac/Win version 1.20 available as preview

This sounds great, will try this asap on my madiFX
Would it be possible to have tmfx sync to midi in? In this way you could have a 3rd option of lockng BPM to incomng clock.
From what I read above these changes will drive TMFX more into the direction of a full blown digital mixer, without the need of an additional DAW. I welcome that.

Re: TotalMix FX Mac/Win version 1.20 available as preview

As I wrote above the changed reverb is not available for you at this time (firmware update needed).

TM FX can not have a BPM detection, simply because it has no access to the audio data. MIDI might be possible, but looks like too much effort for too little gain. Sorry, but other features do have a much higher priority, and the list is long...

This sounds really cool ! Many thanks to RME for working on all those improvements, as UFX and RayDAT user I will wait for the next Beta or final which covers these devices entirely.

Re: TotalMix FX Mac/Win version 1.20 available as preview

Been checking every day since you announced on sunday, been eager to check out the new verbs... but still no windows usb drivers or firmware, so tonight ran up a mac osx inside virtualbox and firmware upgraded fine on both UFX & XTC, then copied the newer totalmix from the hdsp 4.14 windows driver,
The reverbs are fantastic!
hopefully the win usb driver comes soon:)

cheers

haha no problem "the best things come to those who wait!"
no doubt the longest firmware update process ive ever done before!

Really is a brilliant update, takes totalmix to another level, reverb I will use so much more now, especially loving "old school" very warm and lush.

Is there any chance to control those added features via OSC?

By the way: Great work, Update is fantastic!
