Topic: New to Madi: Does this setup work?

Hi
I'm currently doing Live-Recordings with an UFX and a Micstasy connected by ADAT and together with a Laptop with Nuendo Live. For safety I use the USB backup with UFX.

The coming up RME products seem to allow another Setup.
I hope to get the following advantages with it:
+ reducing the length of the microphone cables
+ getting an even higher audio quality
+ leaving the mic-amplifiers (Micstasy and OctaMic XTC) on the stage for...
+ getting more flexibility with the distance "my position (Laptop) <---> mic-amplifiers". 20m - 50m would be useful in larger concert halls

That's my plan:
  * Adding the Madi-Card into Micstasy
  * Buying an OctaMic XTC
  * Buying a Madi-Face USB

Because I'm new to Madi some questions:
1. Does the planed system work?
2. Does the system work without "Leitung 2"? If yes...
3. Do I need the "Leitung 2" for controlling the Micstasy and the OctaMic XTC?
4. Is this correct: I don't need any extra audio interface?
5. Is it possible to use 96kHz/24Bit for these 16 Audio channels with the MADIFACE USB 2.0?

Thanks in advance for answering the questions
Further: Where can I get more information in general about Madi?

Hi Daniel
Thanks for the quick answer and the link. I think I got it.
The understanding of the MADI-system leads me now to a next and probably final question:

If I understand all in the correct way the DAW will "see" the Madiface USB as an (ASIO?)Audio-Interface.
Unfortunately I will not be able to control the sound by listening it in a headphone with the Madiface.
So: Do I need another Audio-Interface for controlling the sound? Will it work, two ASIO-audio interfaces one Laptop?

Re: New to Madi: Does this setup work?

MADIface XT will be your solution. You not only get the analog monitoring outputs, but also the mic input for Talkback to the stage. And a lot more...

Hallo Matthias
Danke für die Antwort (sogar am Wochenede).
I tried to use 2 different Audio-Interfaces with Nuendo Live and Cubase. No chance.
No doubt with Madiface XT it will work (another 1000 EUR for RME - uffhh).
But I wondering now why did you produce Madiface USB? What's its task without the possibility of listening to the incoming music?

Do I have no chance to use it?
Because of using the equipment for live-recordings in concert hall for example I don't need the talkback function.

All the best

Matthias, hi once more
I currently do my Live Recordings with a Micstasy, the Fireface UFC and if I use more Channels yet I add either a Quadmic or/and a Focusrite-8channel Amplifier.
Because I have to be mobile I normally use not more than 8 - 16 Channels with my recording sessions.

So, I believe the huge amount of channels, the talkback function and all the other things of the Madiface XT are bit oversized.
But I could use a bit more High-Quality-Mic-Channels also for looking into the future
That's why I ask for the proper working of another approach which is still open  in the meantime for extending the system in the near future.

Am I correct with Setup 1?
Setup 1: The second Octamic XTC is only used for connecting Madi to the Laptop and for listening to the signals
Setup 2: On the one hand the close distances don't need a transfer per madi. On the other hand I would have the possibility of more channels with e second Octamic XTC until I have a Madiface XT.

Thanks again for helping me to make a working Madi-Decision!

Re: New to Madi: Does this setup work?

Setup 1 does not work as Class Compliant audio only works for Macs. Setup 2 would work if you replace the non-existing UFC with a UFX.

The MADIFace USB is the perfect interface to add a MADI I/O to any Mac/PC. Users will typically just record/playback, or have more MADI equipment in the chain which is used for monitoring.

Hello Matthias
Thanks again.
Sorry for the UFC - of coarse it's an UFX. (I also have an FF UC...) I edited the upper post.

So it seems that I have to go with the Madiface XT as you mentioned above.
Even if I can't use all its abilities now I believe that I'm prepared for the future with it - come what may.
This will lead to two "Recording-Setups" which will cover my needs and different situations very well:

If you see any fault within the diagrams please let me know it.
And then: It's up to you to produce the Madiface XT and the OctaMix XTC as soon as possible... ;-)

All the best and thanks once more.

Re: New to Madi: Does this setup work?

Why not just use an USB2-extender (cat5-lan-cable) for roundabout 70 eur? I think I saw reports here that it works (at least with one interface). Even talkback could be possible if one sees the interface's outputs.
PS CC-mode now also works on Android just fine using Audio Evolution Pro...

Hi Martinhr

Thanks for this hint and the cheap solution
But I'm doing recordings as a professional.
So I need system which has to work in any case. I also like a system which has some more power that I'm currently using.

My plan now is to buy two new Octamics in addition to the Micstasy, then using a Madiface XT over USB 3.0.
So 24 Channels with 96kHz isn't that sure with the USB2-extender.
And 16 Channels with 192kHz doesn't work any more with USB 2.0.
Beside the recordings I want to be able to safely adjust all the units and their parameters over this Madi connection which isn't possible over USB.
Further I believe in the optical transmission because in lots of concert halls and other venues I always have electrical noises from light dimmers etc.

Nevertheless and once more, your suggestion may be an interesting solution for others.
Thanks a lot.

Re: New to Madi: Does this setup work?

Ah, sorry, I was somehow under the wrong impression that CC-Mode would also work under Windows  - which is of course not the case (as also MC stated here in this thread). Sorry!
(Although not stated in the manual, it does work under Android too: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … .aemobile, perhaps at least a solution for quick mobile recordings.)

Re: New to Madi: Does this setup work?

Hi,

I'm doing live recordings and studio too, I would like to know if i can record the 64 madi channels of the octamic xtc in a mac via usb ?

Thanks for your answers.

Re: New to Madi: Does this setup work?

Not directly. Using CC mode the max number of channels is limited to 24 with the XTC.
