Topic: Warning - Windows 10 forced update

I had a scary moment at a live concert I recorded today, and for which I provided sound reinforcement using Total Mix as the mixer. During the sound check with not much time to work with, I went to open TM but it was not there. Drivers still worked, but no TM. I found out later that a recent "update" that Windows provided, without asking as far as I can tell, upgraded my Surface Pro from Windows 8 to 10. I assume this somehow deleted or hid TM. Fortuntely I was able to get online and download and install new drivers and all worked again after about 10 stressful minutes with my client asking " are we ready yet?"

A very bad move by Microsoft that nearly cost me a client. Wanted others to be aware.

Re: Warning - Windows 10 forced update

Microsoft uses not proper methods to enforce the Win10 upgrade.
If you "click away" the upgrade window, then it will be done as if you hit the "ok" button.

Since felt 20 years the meaning of the white cross with red background in the top right window corner is,
to kill / destroy a window and by this canceling the further operation which is bound to it.
Well doing so is now rated as "ok" so that Microsoft can see further progress quicker in terms of Windows upgrades.

I would hope, that there are more mature user to immediately change back by using the restore function of their backup ...

Actions like this are really "poor" and bad manner. This is not building up trust.

BTW .. with a desktop system it helps only to activate the "important" (security) updates, and deactivate the other ones.
Since then I do not get upgrade offers anymore.

Re: Warning - Windows 10 forced update

if people are using machines for critical production stuff, you either need to

1. update to windows 10 asap and do all of your testing etc, (I made the jump very early and have had no issues with any audio drivers/software/plugins etc...)
OR
2. completely disable windows 10 update, until a point you are ready to upgrade.

Yes Microsofts methods here are not the best, but its easily disabled if you dont want to update, hundreds of tech sites/blogs/articles of pages detail how it can easily be done via various methods.
Microsofts own method here - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3080351

Re: Warning - Windows 10 forced update

Afterwards its easy to say wink But not everybody in the recording business is also a good PC admin.

In regards to proposal #1: Sorry but I have to disagree, bad idea. There are enough people who still have issues with windows 10, makes no sense to play early adopter. If it worked for you personally, congrads, but this ONE scenario is not the basement for a recommendation on wider scale or for everybody.

In regards to proposal #2: yes, but as I wrote all those hacks are not required, if you limit the update scope simply to more important / security patches. At least up to now.

Another thing is, that with Windows 10 many things changed:
- Privacy issues / new license which allows Microsoft too much in terms of data usage from you
- Secure Boot and TPM is now tight in the system and can not be deactivated anymore since Win8
now it only requires TPM modules in the CPU or per default on mainboards, and then wait until
external companies play admin on your PC.
- New patch model, not the nicest one if you are not enterprise customer
- Some beloved tools / functionalities are missing
- Tools to optimize the system do not work as accurate anymore do not measure at µs level anymore since Win8
- Administration is now a messy unstructured mixture of old style and new style tablet optimized GUI Windows
- Audio Subsystem optimizations are not reported as good from people using it compared to the hype on gearsluts
- and it is still limited to WASAPI .. nice start you may argue .. but for recording business its still a little nothing

Windows 10 is IMHO still not in the "better shape" as Windows 7 and still has its rough edges

So there are more things too look at, than simply becoming early adoptor to simply "get it done".
Now you have Win10 and have to live with it and all implications.
There might be some good, but I see too many which are really bad.

Re: Warning - Windows 10 forced update

Here is what I use to stop this:

A great tiny app that does MS's recommended Registry/GP edits to stop W10 from auto-upgrading.  This WILL  NOT prevent the GWX updates from downloading or installing, but WILL PREVENT GWX from installing W10 on your system!  "Never 10" is much more streamlined (and smaller!) than the needlessly complicated GWX-Control Panel that I also used:

GRC has been around forever... :-) I used to use their "Shields Up" test at times.

And if all these crooked strategies are not enough for MS, they'll sump your bandwidth:

Could be an Akamai problem too, of course.

I guess I'm writing late, but in case you have problems with the new Windows 10, I've tested various handy utilities to manage things in Windows 10 (regarding updates, telemetry, excessive disk writes and cpu load etc. etc.) and as of today the best free tool I can recommend is O&O Shut Up 10 https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10
