Gents,
as I read, the preferences suggest a MACKIE EXTENDER setting to a Midi-channel 1-4.
Since I am looking for a motor-fader control unit I like to know if I can just use an Extender Unit without the main unit. Will it work?

Added Mackie remote Extender support
In the Settings dialog (F3), tab MIDI, the new entry ‘Extender to…’ allows to add an extender to your existing Mackie remote. The numbering is quite flexible, so it is possible to put the extender left or right of the main remote, and have the same arrangement in TotalMix. This new feature also enables to build fader blocks for other Mackie compatible remotes. You can have multiple remotes synced as one big fader block, and move the whole block from one button.
