Topic: Loud tone from RME Fireface 400 and random sample rate changes

Hi,

Have recently bought a FF400 for my Vista, Q6600 (on P5N-E SLI), Cubase 4.1.3 computer and am having a few problems.

Randomly, Cubase will stall and the FF400 will emit a loud high pitched tone (possibly 1khz) which does not go away when Cubase is exited.  It requires powering off and rebooting windows to get it working again.  I now have to monitor at low volumes for fear of popping my tweeters.  Occasionally just prior to this happening a popup in Cubase says that the sample rate has changed to something random like 96000 or 178000 with no pattern.  I think the two problems might be related.

I have the latest firmware and software drivers and have DDS enabled (tried with this on and off and no change).  I have also disabled all sounds in windows.

Any help much appreciated.  This is driving me mad!

Re: Loud tone from RME Fireface 400 and random sample rate changes

to clarify, i have ensured that my onboard sound is assigned as default for all windows sounds (and have also disabled all sounds in all programs except cubase in case they were causing it)  I have also tried with and without all plugins, virus checker etc. and still it happens.

ARGHHHH!H!!!!!!!!!!

i think i have a dud fireface.

Re: Loud tone from RME Fireface 400 and random sample rate changes

Hi Rowan

Did you ever find out what the problem was? I've got the same thing going on.

New computer, running xp and old logic 5.5 and old cubase.

Logic won't even play any songs at all. It will just chew along stuttering and then freezing. Cubase played fine for a little while before freezing the whole computer and emitting a loud scream from the monitors.

I've disabled all of the onboard sounds from the motherboard and no joy.

Maybe cause I have a generic firewire card is the problem? (I don't have firewire on the motherboard)

I think I've got a dodgey fireface too. I've updated the lastest drivers, but it won't let me flash the fireface to the latest update. Fireface_fut doesn't launch.

Windows gives me this - stating it's recovered from a serious error

I just had this exact problem with my replacement fireface 800 in samplitude.

annoying and scary as hell, and embarrassing when you have paying clients waiting while you reboot. i switched back to my m-audio card for stability even if it sounds duller. I am going to try to figure this out. If you have any luck let me know! RME support? Any ideas?

Re: Loud tone from RME Fireface 400 and random sample rate changes

I had a similar issue with PC.  It can be to do with the PCI bus as well as other various issues. I never could get rid of it totally (Im an IT technician so I did try just abut everything).

In the end I bought a Macbook.  You may think this is a drastic action but I tell you I have never looked back.

And why does it fix it?  Because the integration of Firewire on many of the Macs (mines a slightly older core 2) is just better.

Others will argue but in my case proof was in the pudding.

I am sure that with the correct PC setup you can have a great time, but I could never get RME to recommend a spec for the PC.  Of course that issue is not with Macs, and once you do a bit of research you know what macs to avoid.

How is this exactly the same? The codes appear different (I don't know what they mean, though)...

Not without a detailed description... So you had one crash with Samplitude and a Fireface. Is that reproducible?

Re: Loud tone from RME Fireface 400 and random sample rate changes

Yeah, sorry if I sounded alarmist. You are right, the error code is different. The problem is most likely with the PC, but I never had this problem with my other Fireface, which led me to the conclusion that it was specific to the unit. When your system starts crashing, one tends to become a bit jumpy! I am not a computer guy by any stretch and I just want stuff to work...

This is my system, I have a Startech PCI firewire card and an M-Audio Delta 1010le installed. The system has been optimized for Samplitude using the Orange Hill Audio guide.

Is there anything in this system that is known to cause issues with RME stuff?... thanks.

Re: Loud tone from RME Fireface 400 and random sample rate changes

Hi was this problem ever resolved?

I have the same issue. Using Cubase 5 on XP with a FF400 the system seems to randomly crash suddenly emitting a loud tone which does not stop even if you force Cubase to quit. You have to power down the PC and re-boot.

It happens randomly but happening more often at the moment - very frustrating. Could it be something to do with my Firewire PCI card? Was thinking that this could be replaced but no idea if that would make any difference - just an idea. I was also told it might be a plugin that is causing the issue.

Any help greatfully appreciated as am considering selling the Fireface at this stage as it is becoming unsuable.

Thanks....

Re: Loud tone from RME Fireface 400 and random sample rate changes

That is a behavior which gives me some pain few years ago using my older system, and happened maybe 1 or 2 times using my actual system. The problem is somewhere for sure, but never been able to reproduce 100%.
The only thing that I can suggest is to backup the Cubase's data_folder (rename is a good idea). If you have any older Cubase version already installed, to rename their data folder either. Launching Cubase should now init a new data folder without any reference to previous installation. Once done, to create new project using the default template project available, here I mean to not re-open older project or to use your own template. Then, do your usual things and see if the problem raise again. If that's the case, discard any 3rd party vst & vsti.
For long time I was thinking about a problem with my uad since the projects giving me that blast was always using them.
But at some point I was thinking that using my old project templates from SX3 and SX2 was maybe the source of the problem, and even those created under various build of Cubase.
