Topic: NEWBIE: Upgrading from EMU to RME HDSP 9632

Good greetings to all,

I'm about to upgrade from EMU0404 to my 1st RME 9632.  Doing some research before I do.  I wonder would any of you guys care to offer some advice/experience on any of the following queries:

1:  I have an ASUS H97 Motherboard (Onbaord Snd disabled).  Trying to confirm if any known compatibility issues with RME?

2:  Might my EMU0404 breakout cables (which are similar Sub D type but with TRS) could work instead of the included RCA?  (Is these much difference to sound from the optional XLR breakout?)

3: And would the SPdif work also?

4:  I Gather that some advise keeping PCI Analog I/O as far from PC as possible.  Any Computer interference ever noticed with HDSP 9632?

5:  Finally, may get ADAT Outs for Behringer ADA8200 Ultragain.  Any sync issues and do I really need a Word Clock Cable for this only?

6:  Sorry, one more...  Any practical ideas for using the Headphone Analog out? I can't think of a use when Master outs are going to Monitors controller anyway.

Many thanks in advance for your time.

Best,
Steve

2 No sound quality difference!
4 I didn't anyway

Make sure it is a HDSP9632! not a plain 9632 no recent drivers for that one!

I went from EMU to RME also long ago. Remember the only gain you will see is slightly better asio performance at low latencies, 256 and lower. No sound quality improvement.

Cheers Vinark

Did you go from 0404 or their bigger cards and how much performance improvement did you get?  Could you expand in DAW VSTi terms?  (Use more VSTis, less crackles at high CPU... etc?)

Thanks again.  Appreciated

Re: NEWBIE: Upgrading from EMU to RME HDSP 9632

From a 1212m. At lower latencies you can use 90% or more of the cpu with the rme. With the Emu it was more like 60% before crackles. But at medium latencies thing become equal. The sound quality of the 1212m was quit good. Don't know about your 0404. If you like to work below 256 samples it is well worth it IMHO. But if you are comfortable with 256 or higher not.

I still use the fx of the 1212m via adat for when I am singing (don't record them)

Thank Vin.

Do you use the headphone out at all?

Re: NEWBIE: Upgrading from EMU to RME HDSP 9632

Yes a lot. I have no headphones amp where I use the card. Works very good. But they are the same signal as the analogue out so fed by one AD stage.

and abou q5: no wordclock needed only 2 adat cables. I have heard about sync issues with the old unit ADA8000 not the ADA8200, but I have not used it. If needed the RME can be slave it has steadyclock.
