Topic: RME ADI-8 DS (PSU fail?)

Hi

I've been a long time RME user, and a lurker on this forum. Still use my two fireface400, and love them.

Yesterday I got a ADI-8 DS, and when I switched it on it made a high voltage sound, and the light-diodes (red ones) was lighting.
I'm afraid that it could be the PSU. The unit comes from a locally stationed radio station that had to shut down due to the fact that Norway is shutting down FM. They bought it new in 2010/11. And have been inside a rack all of its life.

How much would it cost to repair/replace the PSU. And is it worth it? (I want it to be worth it because I really want this unit)

I've read that PSU-failures could damage other components too, so I don't want to put to much money into fixing it if that's the case.

If you're adventurous, you can recap the PSU board yourself. If not, a reasonably priced replacement is available from RME or your local distributor. Sorry, forgot the exact price.

I had to buy one for my ADI8 AE. It is about €100. Very easy to install.
@Cyrano. I still have the old PSU. Do you know which caps to replace?

I have an technician who takes care of this stuff. wink I just need to know if its only the PSU, or something else.

Did you guys get this weird problem?

My local distributer want me to send it in for a service witch costs me around 1000 NOK an hour!. So, maybe I just buy the new PSU for the same amount of money and get my technician to install it.

I think so yes. But not 100% sure. It was obvious only one of the 2 voltages was working. Can't remember a sound though.

I remember now that the 5 volt part (processor and converters) run on a PSU from a PC too. I tried that and then the lights behaved normal so I knew that was not fried.

I don't know the ADI PSU. But in the PSU of the FF800, you need to replace alle the electrolytics with good quality low ESR 105°C rated capacitors. That's all, unless the power electronics or so are blown. But I've never had that in four FF800 PSU's.

So, I've changed the PSU and it seems to be working like a charm. All outs is feeding a signal. I'm going to check the ins tomorrow.
You would not believe what I paid for it!

The unit is fully tested and everything is working flawless. I paid 700 NOK for it. That's around 77.15 EUR. Wohaaa. Best buy ever!
