Are there any decent USB to ExpressCard 34 adapters that would let us connect a Madiface HDSPe to a Mac without a Thunderbolt port?

No, no usb to PCI(e) or expresscard is possible. PCI, PCIe, cardbus and exprescard are somewhat adaptable.
