Topic: Feature request: Solo to overrule Mute

I'd find it useful if solo-ing a muted channel would temporarily unmute it and we'd hear that channel. This is how the (analog) desks I have encountered work and is a useful way of checking quickly what's playing on muted channels. Otherwise what's the point in having the ability to solo a muted channel anyway?

Currently it is necessary to unmute the channel first, then solo it. It could be that some people prefer this, so why not adding a preference "solo overrules mute"?

Really loving the ARC USB, and this would speed up the workflow even more.

Re: Feature request: Solo to overrule Mute

TM FX is not an analog desk. Its capabilities far exceed any hardwired desk, which on the other hand often makes simple looking ideas fail quickly when it comes to implementation. An unmuted input channel would not only be audible for your monitoring, but sent out on any output it is routed too. You really don't want that.

Solo in TM FX is bound to the currently selected submix. If that is your Phones or monitoring output - perfect, a recording or play out over the main outputs will continue to work. But Mute is a global function, working for all submixes at the same time. Therefore under the hood such an option would be quite complicated.

Solo on a muted input makes it possible to verify that this input is completely dead and not routed anywhere.

Re: Feature request: Solo to overrule Mute

Pro Tools for example offers three solo modes:

SIP (solo in place)
AFL (after fader listen)
PFL (pre fader listen) [can hear soloed muted track]

There is the PFL option in Totalmix. From the manual: "PFL Mode: Live Mode, PFL replaces Solo. PFL means Pre Fader Listening. This feature is very useful when operating TotalMix in a live environment, as it allows to quickly listen/monitor any of the inputs by hitting the Solo button. The monitoring happens on the output set for the Cue signal via the Assign dialog."

This mode just doesn't quite work as expected IMHO. The behaviour is more like AFL: the fader can still lower the signal when it's soloed, and, as mentioned, the channel should be heard when soloed and muted (and only on the output set for the Cue signal via the Assign dialog)

Re: Feature request: Solo to overrule Mute

This mode works exactly as described. Select Phones 1 as Cue/PFL output. Highlight the Submix output Phones 1. Go to any input that has a signal and make sure the input fader is fully down, so this signal is not heard on the Phones 1 output. Now click on PFL. The fader stays down, but you hear the signal. Definitely Pre Fader.

As Mute is a global function it will override the PFL state, that is correct.

Re: Feature request: Solo to overrule Mute

Solo and PFL no longer blocked by Mute might be easier to implement than expected. It is now on our list for the next big update, TM FX 1.50.
