Topic: Firewire 400 on AC adapter or firewire power

I have question about AC adapter vs firewire on Firewire 400 sound card.

Is it better or safer to have sound card connected trough external power or firewire ? If I connect some quitars or mics to preamps on FF400 would firewire be overloaded somehow or won't deliver enough juice to power both preamps and all other outputs, SPDIF and other stuff ?

FW won't be overloaded, but external power is always safer.

Tnx MC, for fast reply.

Will any external power with same A and V will work and of course same connector ?

Can you tell me what do you mean by safer, can something go wrong trough firewire connection and can't on external power ? I have firewire card with Texas instruments chip connected over PCIe slot with one molex connecting firewire card from PSU so that card is not onboard it has it's own power supply from my Platinum rated PSU.

Correct me If I'm wrong on the back of the FW400 it's written 12W 8 20V , I assume number 8 is A ?

Re: Firewire 400 on AC adapter or firewire power

Use 12 V DC and 1.5 A or up.

This can happen when you rely on FW buspower:

I saw that, good to know, that was some kind of cheap FW card guy had VIA chip on it, VIA sucks. I have Texas instruments and in my experience that's the best chip to use with sound cards. Although I never connect FW cable when PC is on, always when PC is turned Off. And I never disconnect my sound card cause it's in my rack all the time, in my case my FF400 is not portable, but even if it was I know how to properly connect it so mistake like that don't happend.

So except that nothing else to be worry about when comparing FW connection with external power ?

Re: Firewire 400 on AC adapter or firewire power

Oh one more question.

Is it safe when I turn off my PC to switch FW 400 to power on Firewire so that box can turn off and before turning On PC to switch back on power supply ? Because box don't have any On/Off switch so I must pull the plug every night when I turn PC Off.

Re: Firewire 400 on AC adapter or firewire power

I would recommend a simple and cheap Master-Slave power strip.

I have APC PM8-GR surge protector, just that.

Re: Firewire 400 on AC adapter or firewire power

Never used Master-Slave before, can you recommand some good one ? And explain how it works. I see master and slave units where cord should be connected, but don't understand is it working on some timings or how ?

Re: Firewire 400 on AC adapter or firewire power

You can also use something with a footswitch... :-)

Master/Slave would be set up with the PC as master, and when that powers down, power to monitor, audio interface, and other devices is automatically cut as well.

I cannot recommend a specific one, but just to show an example what I am talking about:
