Topic: UFX II or UFX +

hi there,

i'm in the market for a new interface (coming from an apogee ensemble thunderbolt which got defect after 4 years)...
i had a thunderbolt interface for years, would a USB-connection (UFX II) be a step backwards?
will the UFX + (with thunderbolt) be faster for my home studio?

fyi: i won't be recording more than 4 tracks at the time on my imac.

Re: UFX II or UFX +

You can't record 4 tracks any "faster" with Thunderbolt. Still takes the same amount of time...
If you don't need the multichannel MADI connection, there is not much to be gained from the bandwidth of Thunderbolt (or USB 3.0), and the UFX II will be quite sufficient.

Re: UFX II or UFX +

thanks, great to hear! there is a lot of confusing information on the www... here they are saying that thunderbolt gives less latency than USB2, but the reality will be more complicated than that, i guess...?

audiomasterclass.com/newsletter/is-your-audio-interface-fast-enough

Due to its direct connection through to the heart of the computer, Thunderbolt 2.0 offers significant advantages in latency over USB and FireWire. This, to the home studio owner, is likely to be its greatest advantage rather than the possibility of vast numbers of channels.

Re: UFX II or UFX +

A: Marketing speak..
B: With worse drivers this might be true but not with RME.

Re: UFX II or UFX +

To underpin this, see what the different ASIO drivers tell the DAW, which RTT they have..

I collected this information for a few of my blog articles, i.e. these two:

Re: UFX II or UFX +

the ARC USB might be interesting. i'm enjoying the RME a lot at the moment. the only thing i'm still wondering is: can i mute the main outs by using the buttons on the front panel?
on the apogee i had to press the main volume fader, which was handy.
when recording myself i switch a lot between muting and unmuting the speakers so a shortcut (instead of using totalmix) would be handy.

Re: UFX II or UFX +

You have the device in front of you, simply try its not much work wink

Press Chan/Mix .. it has a double function
1. if you press it the 1st time -> display of input and output channels
There you find the mute function channel, so also for analog 1/2 .. channel muted.
2. if you press it the 2nd time -> display for the submixes per output channel

Re: UFX II or UFX +

hi ramses, i feel like an idiot that i can't mute the speakers, even with your instructions... and the manual doesn't say much about it.
would you mind to tell me step by step?
what i'm doing now:
i press "CHAN/MIX".
then i see on top"analog in 1/2" - if i mute that, it doesn't mute the "outs"?

Was that an exclamation or a question ? I am irritated by the "?"

To which outputs are your speakers connected ? AN 1/2 ?
Then mute should mute these 2 outputs, I tested it.
