Topic: UFX II multiple audio interfaces setup

Hi, I recently upgrade my studio with an RME UFX II that I've connected to my already owned ferrofish pulse 16 via ADAT. Now I'm using all RME/ferrofish analog I/Os to connect my Soundcraft 400b 16ch mixer I/Os to my daw. Now the question, I want to upgrade my recording system with some analog outboard, now I'm using some channel of the mixer routed into the external comp/eq and then to the AD, but I want to eliminate this routing to connect the outboard directly to a converter I/O and all channel of my mixer routed as always directly into the RME/ferrofish converters. To do that I've seen the "madi way", but it's too expensive for me, so I'm here to ask you if it's possible to use another RME FireWire or USB soundcard in conjunction with the UFX II to have more I/Os for my system. I running my DAWs (PT11/reaper) on win10pro with MADIfaceusb driver. What I think is possible? Thank u all for support!

Re: UFX II multiple audio interfaces setup

It 's possible in theory, but may work more or less reliably, depending on the computer. There is a chapter in the UFX' manual on the topic. You are free to try, but we can't guarantee perfect results.

Re: UFX II multiple audio interfaces setup

Thank you Daniel for support! I read the manual at page 26 in which there is the infos about this type of operation. I have one more question about the paragraph:

"The driver supports up to three Fireface UFX II or a combination of up to three supported interfaces."

How can I know which interfaces are supported? (I've not seen a list of interfaces in the manual or in the RME website in the UFXII session)

Thanks you in advance!

Re: UFX II multiple audio interfaces setup

The three supported interfaces would be any of the units using the same driver, as seen here:

Windows 7 to 10 PnP driver for MADIface XT / USB / Pro, Fireface UFX+ / UFX II, OctaMic XTC, ADI-2 Pro/AE/FS/DAC, Digiface USB / Dante

Re: UFX II multiple audio interfaces setup

I would directly go to 32 analog channel / MADI based solution.

As nice as the stacking of 2-3 supported interfaces is, it has also its disadvantages:

  • You need to work with 2-3 TM FX instances

  • Routing only works inside of a TM FX instance

  • You need to clock sync them and eventually "sacrifice" digital I/Os for this purpose (only digital PCI/PCIe cards support an internal sync link cable)

  • You need to always ensure that all cards use the same ASIO buffersize in the driver settings dialog

  • Having to work with multiple TM FX instances can become an operational burden

Did you look already into these MADI solutions ?

Re: UFX II multiple audio interfaces setup

BTW, I wrote last recently a review of this card and an interesting basic setup including ADI-2 Pro FS integration
and a few maybe interesting screenshots of TM FX (my parallel effect loop routing for a Marshall amp) and my DIGICheck workspace with a collection of DIGIcheck tools enabled, which I personally regard as very useful for most situations.

Here the URL to the review (PDF, EN): https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/index.ph … l-v1-0-pdf

Here the entry point / blog article containing all screenshots / pictures of the review if you only want to scroll through the pictures: https://www.tonstudio-forum.de/blog/ind … ct-Review/
