Topic: How to duplicate MADI stream?

What is a simple (and cheap...) way to create two MADI streams from one, in order to be able to feed two madifaces instead of one? Source will be optical fibre.

A passive optical splitter. With shorter cable runs that works.

Re: How to duplicate MADI stream?

Thanks - but the passive optical splitters I found seem to have quite short cables firmly connected to the splitter. However, I would like to connect my 50m optical cable with two madifaces - in that case this doesn't seem to work - or did I just miss the right offers?

Nobody? How do you set up your MADI equipment for recording on two PCs, for safety reasons?

Re: How to duplicate MADI stream?

Sorry, do not know a non-expensive solution for your demand.
I would think of MADI router, alternatively HDSPe MADI FX which is also able to act as MADI router.

Re: How to duplicate MADI stream?

Hello,

A - As MC said an optical splitter can be used even with longer fiber but only on the input side, not the output side.  The output sides need to be short to prevent excessive reflections back to the splitter but the input side can be longer.  Note that when you add a longer fiber to the input side the optical level will be attenuated slightly through the fiber butt meaning the optical receivers in the Madiface will not be able to receive at some attenuation level.  You'll need to experiment and, of course, you have fiber cleaners, correct?
Note that optical receivers have a light budget, meaning they'll successfully resolve optical power levels between certain limits which is why a splitter can work.
Also note that the duplex SC ports on the Madiface are multi-mode (unless you've replaced them with single-mode as we have) so be sure your fiber and splitter are multimode.

B - if you have access to electrical (coax) Madi connections, a high bandwidth analog video DA can function as a Madi DA.  Many analog DAs have bandwidths of 200MHz or better and work well for Madi.  Note that Madi is VERY susceptible to ground loop issues, far more than SDI video, so if your gear is separated that can be a problem.

C - Buy a used Madi Bridge or whatever it's called.

Hugh

Re: How to duplicate MADI stream?

Thank you!
This optical splitter thing still sounds interesting, any ideas where to find exactly one that works as you described? So far I have failed to find it on the web...

No, I don't have fiber cleaners yet - but I understand I should...

Re: How to duplicate MADI stream?

Here in the Netherlands the google search term Optical Splitter gives many useful hits.

I bought mine here:

Alternatively get a used directout Ma2chbox.

Re: How to duplicate MADI stream?

Thanks, Georg, but these products don't have an input socket (female connector) for my 50m cable (from stagebox), do I see this right? Is there such a thing with a female connector for input and two outputs (for output male connector is possible)?
How do you apply these products in your setup?

This one is all female right?

That's TOSLINK, that's for ADAT but doesn't fit for MADI.

FWIW, we prefer the DURec function on a UFX for backup, especially given that laptops are the weakest link!  This only works for certain channel counts though, depending on your sample rate and which outputs the MADI preamps have.

A MADIface USB or HDSPe + second laptop is also a relatively inexpensive solution.
