Topic: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

The Mac supports AVB natively and thus there is no need to use a costly and external, third party solution to have AVB available on a Mac computer. That was our thought as well,  and the reason the Digiface AVB was released as Windows only. But we quickly got a lot of requests from frustrated customers that wanted the same ease  of use plus low latency plus TotalMix on their Macs, like the Digiface AVB delivers it under Windows. So here we go - the Digiface AVB is now ready to be used on a Mac computer! Our interface does not use the Mac's AVB implementation but RME's, and gives access to AVB as 128 channel USB 3 audio interface, including TotalMix FX support (but no FX) .

What you need:

- the latest released driver 3.15. It includes TotalMix FX and full support for the Digiface AVB.

- the latest firmware version. If your Digiface AVB is below 204 download the official Mac flash update tool, 204 is in there.

- RME's AVB controller to awake and access the Digiface AVB.

- Mac OS X 10.11 or up

As this version is our very first implementation I opted to release it here before it will be available on our website in a few days.

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

The AVB Controller has now been updated to the same state as the Windows one (09400). Therefore Mac AVB support is now official and can be downloaded from our website's download pages as well (same links as above).

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

Thank you for the new driver.

I'm now able to use the Digiface AVB as an audiocard. However the AVB part of it doesn't seem to work. I have 4 avb devices (3 Motu AVB devices and 1 Digiface AVB) all connected through the same Motu AVB switch. They're on the same lan (192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0)

I can see the three Motu devices on the avb network via the network connection on the Digiface, but not the Digiface. And I'm not able see any AVB-devices in the RME AVB controller software, and I'm not able to make any connections through the RME AVB controller. It's just a blank sheet.

Do you have any idea if I'm doing something wrong or there is bug in the software.

If I run windows 10 I don't have any problems.

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

Good question!.

I think I tried to install it on three different computers. Two Mac Minis from the latest generation running Mojave and a 4 year old Macbook Pro. One of the minis was a fresh install with the latest drivers on your webpage, so at least that one ought to be all right, but it wasn’t.

If I open the AVB controller on the Macbook it’s also the latest version. And the ‘About’ menu says it’s version 1.0 (1).

I don’t have the interface with me, so that’s all I can do for now.

All the Best

M!

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

The RME Mac AVB Controller 0.9402.2 solves the problem that the assignment of USB device and network interface based on the Mac address may not work depending on the current computer. A different mechanism is now used to determine the Mac addresses of the existing Ethernet interfaces.

Thank you!

That did the trick.

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

The RME Mac AVB Controller 0.94023 for the Digiface AVB fixes these issues:

- The Presentation Time Offset (network latency) is now remembered after restart of the Controller

- Reopening the Configure dialog did not show the formerly set AAF stream channel settings

- Configuring the CRF output stream did not work (was fixed to 8 channel AM824)

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

Hi Matthias,

I've been using the Digiface AVB for some time now with a Meyer Sound GALAXY. Sound quality and stability seems to be very good, but I didn't expect anything less from RME. ;-)

Connecting a stream with RME controller or with Hive works, although discovery of the Digiface AVB is quite slow in Hive and Hive produces some warnings like

[0x480bb2fffedcae60] OwningEntity field is not set to 0 on a ReleaseEntity response

and

[0x480bb2fffedcae60] Received an invalid non-success GET_STREAM_INFO AEM response (Incorrect payload size) from 0x480bb2fffedcae60 but still processing it because of compilation option IGNORE_INVALID_NON_SUCCESS_AEM_RESPONSES

When configuring the stream settings in the RME controller, the combo boxes now show what was set before, but they still do not expand when the window is resized. When an output stream is set to AAF, the text is cut off. Maybe the window can be made wider as default?

Is it going to be possible to use the Digiface AVB without having to run the RME AVB Controller, i.e. moving the entity stack from the controller into the interface itself, like with the M-32 Pro? The requirement, to have the RME controller running has already led to some confusion, with colleagues stating "that the Digiface AVB just doesn't work, you cannot even discover it". Which is not true, but I ran into the same issue, when I connected the interface the first time myself.

Also, while it can be convenient to use the Digiface AVB as Ethernet adapter for the host computer, it would be great, if one could disable the Ethernet interface and still be able to use the Digiface as pure audio interface. And yes, I know, it's in the manual ...

For the record: I am running macOS 10.14.4, firmware v204, driver v3.15, controller 094023.

Thanks
Arno

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

Thanks for your feedback. We will check.

Please note that the Digiface AVB has been designed as is, there is simply no hardware where the 'controller' could be moved to. So this will not change.

Unfortunately our current design of the Mac version does not allow to switch off the ethernet port without losing the AVB functionality (this is possible under Windows, though). It might come in a later firmware / software update.

Regarding the 'text cut off': we were able to reproduce this and will fix it.

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

We have updated both Mac and Win AVB Controller to version 09405, to address the points that you raised:

- Quick discovery in Hive

- Removed some causes for error messages

- Made Configure dialog wider so no text cutting anymore

Available on our website at Downloads.

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

We spent some more time using the Digiface AVB with Meyer Sound GALAXY processors. It looks like the Digiface AVB doesn't respond to GET_NAME commands. IIRC 1722.1-2013 says that a device should reply with NOT_IMPLEMENTED for commands, for commands that it doesn't implement. The GALAXY retries several times to get an answer. At some point it gives up and flags the devices as being not fully enumerated. The control software of the GALAXY won't let the user connect to a Digiface AVB directly and the user has to use an external controller.

Would it be possible to add the NOT_IMPLEMENTED reply? That would make the user experience much more seamless.

Another observation: When playing back a stereo signal to the software playback channels 1+2 and distributing them to the Hardware Outputs 1-32 using the matrix in TotalMix, only the first and third stream seem to carry audio. The second and fourth stream seem to be silent. Am I doing something wrong here?

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

We made some big steps forward for full Milan compatibility, and fixed a few annoyances on the way. The latest versions are:

Windows combo installer with driver 0.9704 and AVB Controller 0.9512:

http://rme-audio.de/downloads/driver_ma … _09512.zip

The same new features for Mac:

http://rme-audio.de/downloads/rme_avb_c … er_mac.zip

The internal version number is slightly lower (0.9472), because some quirks were present only under Windows.

To be able to use the new features the Digiface AVB has to be updated to firmware version 215!

http://rme-audio.de/downloads/fut_madiface_mac.zip

http://rme-audio.de/downloads/fut_madifacenet_win.zip

The news include higher compatibility to Milan: The DF AVB is now listed as Milan compatible in Hive, and Hive's routing matrix can now be used with the DF AVB. For more check the driver readme.

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

A new Windows and Mac AVB controller plus new firmware for the Digiface AVB are now available for download. Lots of bugfixes and improvements, plus improved compatibility (see readme).

Under Mac a Milan switch was added,  to be able to use the Mac's native AVB or Milan.

Re: Digiface AVB support for Mac now available

This is the whole point of being Milan-compatible but just to be 100% sure: can you confirm that it works properly with L-Acoustics?

Thanks!
