Topic: Meters pre-volume

Hi!

Right now I have no use for the LR meters since they're post volume.
But it would be very useful to to have them show pre-volume levels.

As an option of course. Pre / Post volume metering.

Thanks!

Johan

Hi!

Use DigiCheck!

I would love to but It doesnt work on Macs.

Re: Meters pre-volume

Interesting discussion.

But I agree with Miguel here. Professionals rather need pre metering, pleasure listeners need post metering.

And as MC says, the other brands can't do post. Well, and RME cant do pre? So it's a tie.

So for me I can't see the use of post volume metering unless I was doing heavy EQing in the ADI-2 Pro and had the volume close to 0.

But I use active monitors and never come close to driving the Volume close to zero. And I dont use the EQ, that's more for pleasure listening I guess (mind room correction if you want)

It would be very handy to be able to check levels of an audio file from Finder on the ADI-2 Pro. Is it full scale? Is it -23 LUFS? Is it -14 LUFS? etc..

For me, monitoring levels with DIGICheck works on Mac if I use the SPDIF input (optical in my case) and record with USB. To do this, I set the DAC's source to Optical. However, I use a test version of the upcoming FW, so this might not work for you.

Re: Meters pre-volume

Since I've got great EBU128 LUFS meters etc inside Pro Tools digichek would be pretty much the same thing. Actually the ADI-2 Pro meters would fill another area of use, the quick level check without having to open up metering applications on the computer.

So for me, pre volume metering straight off the ADI-2 Pro display would be even better than Digichek.

And yes I can use digichek on my Mac by looping the optical output to its input in multi cc mode and choosing spdif as input in digichek,

but we're still looking at post fader metering.

Re: Meters pre-volume

By "post fader" do you mean after the signal was attenuated by the volume control in the Pro?

In the DAC, digital recording happens before the DSP (DAC manual p. 66).

The block diagrams for the Pro suggest the same is possible with the Pro (both stereo and multi channel) (Pro manual p. 36 & 37, Pro FS manual p. 37 & 38).

Also, as mentioned by MC in one of the threads I linked to, the Global Level Meter top screen would show you the level of the incoming signal, unless you are using the USB input (Pro manual p.29).

Pro manual: https://archiv.rme-audio.de/download/adi2pro_e.pdf
Pro FS manual: https://archiv.rme-audio.de/download/adi2profs_e.pdf

Exactly, the meter shows levels after volume attenuation.

"Also, as mentioned by MC in one of the threads I linked to, the Global Level Meter top screen would show you the level of the incoming signal, unless you are using the USB input (Pro manual p.29)."

Yeah, I'm doing mixing and mastering so I'm only using the USB input from my Mac.

Re: Meters pre-volume

According to the block diagrams mentioned in my previous post, by looping back one of the digital outputs, you should be able to use the Global Level Meter top screen to check the unattenuated level.

Re: Meters pre-volume

Hmm. I was looping back the optical just to try digicheck and those level are post volume. It's probably always POST with usb input.

Re: Meters pre-volume

From the manual (Pro p. 36):

The option Digital Out Source - Main Out (SETUP – Options – Hardware/Diagnosis) sends the
processed signal Main Out 1/2 to the digital outputs AES, SPDIF and ADAT, for example to
connect active monitors having digital inputs.

and from p. 26

Dig. Out Source
Default, Main Out. Copies the signal Main Out 1/2 (including EQ and volume) to the digital outputs AES and SPDIF/ADAT. Useful when connecting active monitors with digital inputs.

Oddly, the Pro FS manual does not contain the latter quote while containing the former quote.

Also, from https://www.forum.rme-audio.de/viewtopic.php?id=27467:

MC wrote:

Solution for the digital outputs AES/SPDIF/ADAT: The option 'Digital Out Source - Main Out' puts the volume control (all DSP) into the digital output path.

Check that setting and see if it set such that the digital output should not go through the DSP.

It does. On page 27.

Re: Meters pre-volume

I see it has been moved to 14.1.3 Device Mode.

However, the other quote in the same manual says the setting is under: Setup -> Options -> Hardware/Diagnosis (Pro FS manual v. 2.3 p. 37). Thus, I expected to find it under 14.1.1 Hardware/Diagnosis where it no longer is.

Re: Meters pre-volume

As you have an ADI you should be aware that Digital Out Source had been moved to Device Mode in a former firmware update. The older text note is found on page 35, 36, 37, 38 and 40, and was obviously overlooked. I will correct it.

Re: Meters pre-volume

I only have an ADI-2 DAC to which this does not apply and hence I was not aware of it. Anyways, good to have this cleared up.

Re: Meters pre-volume

Pre volume meters would be quite appreciated. I often use headphones with around -30 dBr volume and there is not much going on on the meters.
