Topic: MIDI latency

I'm wondering how much added latency there is when sending a MIDI signal through a MIDI din cable on the RME HDSP9632? I Believe a midi signal takes about 1ms or so but unsure.

Is it better to use midi via USB if latency is critical? Most midi instruments nowadays have midi via USB.

A drum module from an electronic drum kit will take about 2-3ms to trigger a signal and then there is the added latency of the MIDI signal being sent/recieved and also the output audio latency of the sound card. I would like to minimise that so I'm wondering what is best.

With the hdsp the total latency should be about 6ms from pad hit to sound output if my estimation is right.

I read the manual and it says the HDSP has 16 channels of "high speed MIDI". What does that mean? Is it somehow faster than regular midi?

I could test by recording the latency but I don't have an Electronic drum kit yet.
