Topic: Connecting Neumann U87ai to Babyface or UCX

Hi,

I am borrowing a Neumann U87AI microphone for a fee weeks to record vocals. I have access to the RME Babyface Pro and also the RME UCX units.

My question is whether the pre-amps will be better in the Babyface Pro or the UCX for this microphone?

Also do you suggest a separate high grade pre-amplifier between the microphone and the RME unit? If so can you recommend a few?

Thanks in advance.  I greatly appreciate and respect your knowledge and assistance in this.

Did you already make own tests ? Did you hear a difference ?

No. I am borrowing the U87AI, I have not borrowed it yet. :-)

I don't know the difference between UCX and Babyface. I would guess you don't recognize a huge difference.

I would recommend using a good preamp though. A dedicated preamp will give you a big boost in quality. Something like a Great River ME-1 NV e.g. is a good investment.

Both products have high quality preamps, so no need to use any other preamp unless you want to add colour or distortion to the signal going in.
