Topic: Fireface 800 not recognized by Win10 (but Cubase works)

Hi everyone

Since I upgraded my machine to Windows 10 in March I started observing erratic behaviors between my FF800 and Windows 10.
I'm re-routing Windows internally to Analog 3+4 to then monitor it in Cubase and insert all of this into my ARC plug-in in the Control Room.

The occurrences and severity of the problems have kept growing lately. Here are some of the problems I might encounter after Windows was started:

  • Windows changes the main output device, randomly, can be ADAT or Analog 7+8, whatever it wants. The current workaround is to manually change back to my regular output for windows

  • Windows changes the main output device to a secondary Fireface driver apparently installed. So I basically see two Fireface 800 competing against each other in the sound device manager of Windows. In the Device Manager I also see 2 drivers instead of one. Here it's not as easy as it seems. Changing to the apparent "primary Fireface" driver will likely not solve the problem. Best is to just restart the machine and pray

  • Today things got worst here. Windows does NOT see any Fireface anymore. Not in the Device manager even although Totalmix and Fireface Monitor totally recognize and see it. The Host LED is also not red. Cubase works as per usual but there is no way to get sound out of my Windows...

All my drivers and firmware are up-to-date
Driver version 3.125
Firmware 2.77
OS Name    Microsoft Windows 10 Pro N
Version    10.0.18363 Build 18363

I'm hopeless of what the root cause could be here. Any hint folks?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hello!

How are your WDM Devices configured in the RME Settings? Is every I/O set as WDM Device?
If yes, can you uncheck every one of them, except the ones you, actually, need and repeat your tests?

Also, make sure to set the sample rate of Windows sound settings, to the same sample rate that you use in Cubase!

Hi!

Hum it's the very first time I heard of WDM devices (googled what it meant and approximately grasped what this supposedly is). I believe I have never intentionally checked or unchecked anything related to WDM devices though.

Although I am not sure which RME settings you are referring to specifically. The closest I could get is the main tab of the Fireface settings which indicates that there are 0 WDM devices, whatever this concretely means. sad

Re: Fireface 800 not recognized by Win10 (but Cubase works)

Ok now had a blue screen after the log-in screen of Windows and due to the Fireface. I believe there is something wrong, could be perhaps that I could upgrade my Firewire card (TI tho...). Unfortunately couldn't take a snapshot of the BSOD's QR code.

Now at least I see a fireface driver, only one, prefixed with 3. It seems that Windows has installed now a 3rd driver for the same interface weird.

I managed to copy the event in the Reliability History at least

Then Windows can not see or change audio outputs, as those don't exist. Windows audio devices are configured in the Sound control panel.

Note that your unit might be defective. You should test it on another computer.

Re: Fireface 800 not recognized by Win10 (but Cubase works)

Hi!

Could be but I highly suspect this has to do with Windows 10 honestly.

So today I've got this 3 - RME Fireface 800 detected by Windows somehow.
It's competing with Cubase when II start monitoring Windows output (4+5) into my Cubase project. Then the audio stream is completely f*cked.
It appears impossible to open the Fireface settings, the app won't respond. The best thing to do is to restart but I wanted to list the new symptoms.

I saw on another thread on this forum that I might try to downgrade the driver to an earlier version? like 123?

Have you installed the Legacy Firewire driver? (Note that proper installation is a two step process.)

True I've heard of this fix too and some of the peeps here reported better stability.
It feels weird to have to switch from the TI one to the generic legacy ones from Microsoft though. Is there any risk of performance loss?
