Topic: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

I have an optical connection to a USB Phono Plus. But the ADI-2 won't stay on Optical...it will switch to COAX after a few minutes and start blinking and I lose audio. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or something with MIDI settings.

Here my chain: mic-->GAP 73pre-->ADI-2--(optical cables)-->USB Phono Plus--> Mac Mini

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Chris

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

What exactly does "won't stay in synch" refer to?

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

Normally lights stable (no blinking) on OPT and all is OK....but after a few minutes the lights start to blink on COAX and no audio...can't get it to stay.

Not sure how to attach an image....

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

How exactly are the devices connected, and how are they configured? Perhaps both are set to run on internal clock, which won't work.. No way to directly attach images, use Imgur or the like.

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

Mic (XLR) to GAP73 pre
GAP73 pre (TRS cable) to R channel of ADI-2
ADI-2 (Optical cables) to USB Phono Pro
Phono Pro (USB cable) to Mac Mini

So I normally switch Input to OPT and no problems. But suddenly it won't stay on OPT and starts blinking on COAX and back and forth as if there is no OPT connection.

What I've done as a temp fix is to TAPE the Input switch down so it stays on OPT.....

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

Why not going USB directly from the ADI-2 to the Mac Mini?

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

How? Via what connection?

No USB on ADI-2...

ADI-2 DAC (with stock PSU) - Neumann KH 310 A monitors - Cheap USB and XLR cables

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

According to your description you forgot to use a second optical cable from Phono Pro to the ADI-2. Without that the ADI-2 can not sync to anything as there is nothing to sync to. If thatwas intentionally then the ADI-2 must be set to Master/Internal clock with the correct sample rate, as explained in the manual.

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

I have optical cables from ADI-2 to USB Phono Pro. I've used this configuration for years without any issues...and only yesterday did the ADI-2 not stay on OPT for input. As a quick fix I'm using a piece of tape to hold the Input button down which keeps it on OPT.

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

If you run into this blinking state remove the optical cable which goes from ADI to the Phono Pro - not the other one which goes from Phono Pro to ADI. Does the blinking stop?

Also I did not see any tape in your photos, so don't know what you mean with 'hold Input button down'.

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

When I remove the optical cable from ADI (out) to Phono Pro (in) the ADI's OPT the blinking stops and I can get audio from my computer to my monitors (good). But I can no longer get audio from my preamp-->ADI-->PhonoPlus-->computer with that cable removed. I would like to use the ADI as an Input/Output device.

This is my temporary fix with the tape:

Please advise. Thanks!

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

If the tape helps it sounds like a dirty encoder/pot/knob. Just switch the knob to all positions for a few minutes and see if the problem is gone after that.
I do not know if this is an encoder/knob you can use contact spray on.

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

So after unplugging the ADI (out) to Phono Pro (in) optical cable the OPT light was steady (no blinking)...after a few minutes I plugged in the other optical cable...and the OPT light is still holding steady. No blinking and no tape. Hmm.

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

It was OK for a while but started blinking again and I went back to the tape... any suggestions?

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

This button doesn't normally need to be held in place, it just steps through the various options. This could be a hadware issue.

You constantly confuse me. The point here would be that the input switched to Coax again. The blinking is irrelevant as it is logical if the input was switched. So what happened: stayed on  optical and started blinking, or changed magically to Coax? In that latter case it is a hardware issue in the ADI-2 or the ADI-2 power supply.

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

Even with optical cables from the ADI-2 to the USB Phono Pro the Input will not stay on OPT. After a minute or more the lights will blink between OPT and Coax (and back and forth). The only way I can keep it on OPT is to use tape to hold the button in. I don't know if this is a hardware problem with the ADI or USB Phono Pro.

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

Do you have any other device with optical out, like a desktop CD player, to check?
Did you try another optical cable?

Did you try this and it didn't help or did you ignore it?

Re: suddenly ADI-2 won't stay in synch

The buttons are not knobs/pots so I used contact spray on the cable ends. But now, for some reason, the other buttons won't work at all. I've managed to use tape again to hold the Input button down in the OPT position so currently usable.

I've contacted the local RME support/repair center in Tokyo so see if they can service it. And am looking for way of eliminating the ADI-2 from my chain altogether if necessary.
