Topic: input status on babyface

Hello, I bought an old rosetta 800 192khz that I would like to use as a converter and my rme babyface (not pro) as an interface for the imac.

Connections:
babyface usb to imac
rosetta adat 1-4 in to babyface adat out
rosetta adat 1-4 out to babyface adat in

I set "clock source" as optical in on rme, but the input status becomes 48khz even if in the rosetta 800 I choose 96khz. Why doesn't it indicate 96khz instead?

I can hear music from rosetta output, and total mix show me 96k ... but "input status" show adat sync 48.

Some additional info and scenarios:

a) rosetta sample rate 44.1 ---> babyface input status sync 44.1
b) rosetta sample rate 48 ---> babyface input status sync 48
c) rosetta sample rate 88.2 ---> babyface input status sync 44.1
d) rosetta sample rate 96 ---> babyface input status sync 48
e) rosetta sample rate 176.4 ---> babyface input status NO LOCK
f) rosetta sample rate 192 ---> babyface input status NO LOCK

a) and b) seems to me ok, also e) and f) are ok.
c) and d) I don't know.

with low freq, rosetta adat orange light only is on. At high freq orange adat and smux light is on:

Reading the manual helps: ADAT is always Single Speed, SMUX does not change the physical (carrier) sample rate.

I know smux protocol operate at 48khz on two channel and result in 96khz stream.

However, since there is no smux transfer indicator in babyface,
one would find it easier to read 96k to be sure of correct operation, otherwise it is easy to remain in doubt.
or 48kh (smux) for example.
or 48kh (x2)

... I belive and sorry for my bad english.

How can it read 96 kHz when the input signal is 48 kHz? How can the hardware measurement feature know the meaning of the audio content?

Maybe I do something useless but when I use the 96k rosette, I also set the babyface to 96k sample rate. If the babyface sample rate is 96k, shouldn't the adat channel operate in smux mode? I mean that the currently set sample rate could be an indicator.

Please don't consider my tone polemical, he doesn't want to be.


about sample rate: I noticed that if I set eg. 96k of sample rate on the babyface and in the Rosetta frequency change, ad 44.1, 48, ...., 192k, the babyface sample rate swap from 96k to 88.2k each rosetta step.

You will see that ADAT is working in SMUX if the number of ADAT channels in Totalmix is reduced to 4. The physical sample rate across the optical connection still remains 48, you get 96 by combining samples. This is perfectly normal.

Hi Daniel- I'm new here and new to RME products as well. Was having a similar issue. Can I just check. I have a new Digigface USB, and have two adat cables running from a Focusrite Octopre set at 96Khz. In the "Fireface USB Settings" pane, with Optical In 1 & 2 show up as Locked at 48Khz....and remain at that no matter what I select on the Octopre (even sample rates as high as 192Khz). Do I just need to assume that the Digiface is in fact accepting 24 bit 96Khz?  All very best. Jeremy.
