Topic: 12mic Residual noise?

On the RME 12mic 12mic remote, the meter is at about -107dB.
If the terminal is open, it is about -107dB.

If the terminal is connected, it is about -90dB.

It is not a problem because you don't hear anything in actual operation.
The total mix shows INFINITY (∞).

I'm a little concerned about this.

Is this a specification?

Re: 12mic Residual noise?

Welcome to the world of RFI big_smile

Any high-gain amplifier will show something on it's output with nothing connected to the input.

As well shielded as an XLR n a metal case is, the amp will see those few mm of pins as an antenne and do what it's designed for: amplify.

If you want to measure, you need to bridge pen 2 and 3 of the XLR with a 200 Ohm resistor. Than you'll get a meaningful number.

Besides, an XLR with such a resistor should be in your toolkit. I use it to check mixers, fi. Plug in, set everything on max and listen. If you check all channels in a row, you'll notice the bad ones immediately.

Re: 12mic Residual noise?

Dear cyrano

Thank you for your answer.

It is true that there is no such thing as a noise floor in the analog world.

However, I've been using fireface UCX and UFX for a while now.
I've been using the fireface UCX and UFX, and the infinity display (∞) on the total mix screen has been bothering me.

Kind regards

Ah, I see what you mean now. Sorry for being dense, again big_smile

It's the discrepancy in the readout that bothers you.

I suspect that's by design. Maybe the infinity reading has a filter that limits the bandwidth to audio? Or maybe not and it's just the display showing infinity below -100 dB to suppress flickering useless data?

Re: 12mic Residual noise?

∞ is the current fader position, not the level meter (insert facepalm here).

Re: 12mic Residual noise?

Thank you all for your answers.

I'll try to think of it as indicating the noise floor, exactly.
