Topic: Messing around with Totalmix

Setup : MacBook Air M1 ,  Babyface Silver  and a ADAT
The Babyface firmware is up to date, latest Driver is installed.
The system works fine.
But when the ADAT is connected things are wired inside Totalmix !
The input channels ADAT 1/2 are not there.
Instead of ADAT1 or 2 there is AN1/2.
The signals from the AdAT-unit arrives the Totalmix correctly but in the Computer the DAWs get it wrong.
ADAT mic 1 is available as input 3 !
And so on, every ADAT channel is shifted two steps, in every DAW I tested.

I just want to record a bunch of mics into Logic.
I would like to have those mics in correct place on the matching Input Number.
I would like to see ADAT 1/2 input channels inside Totalmix.

What stands AN and AS for ?
I did reset the Totalmix to the simplest option.

The ADAT-unit is not an RME, I borrowed it from a friend and there in his studio it works well.
The connection of the ADAT was ok, I know this sync configurations well.

Everything is set to 44.1 kHz !

I think there might be a problem in the new USB driver for M1-Macs ?

I am very sorry for not having enough money at the moment for a new Babyface Pro and an Octamic ll, it's on my wish list.

Thank you very much for support in any case, hints tips ideas etc.

ADAT 1/2 did not vanish - it was never there. That is AS 1/2 (ADAT / SPDIF).

If any second channel is missing then the external ADAT unit (which one - model?) is set to 96 kHz.

Oh wow ! AS is Adat / Spdif ! That makes sense.

This ADAT is a ADA8200 from Behringer and I am very surprised that it works much better as expected.
I expected to have a white noise and a smoke but it does the job just ok.

But the problem of shifted input numbers still is not solved.
The AS1 is in Logic the input 3, what can I record on Logics input 1/2 ?
I will try to do a deep test tomorrow with all Babyface inputs connected to mics or guitar.
There is probably a tree in front of my face.

As soon as I can sell my Eventide Eclipse, I will buy a new Octamic ll !
If anyone would like to do an exchange of these units ?
Before I give it away I will hook it up to the Babyface to check out the situation with this unit connected with toslinks.

I use the Babyface Pro with the ada8200 and all the ins and outs are fine in Cubase. I suspect you are not mapping them correctly in logic. In Cubase I set up connections and assign the available input/ outputs to them. You should have something similar in logic. In Cubase they show up as AN 1 to 4 then the AS 1 and 2 followed by the ADAT 3 to 8. Just map these in logic. You don’t mention it but are you connecting both optical in and out? One of the reasons I got the ada8200 apart from it being cheap and I wanted a few more outputs was I could clock it from Babyface.

Hello Mkok, thank you very much for your respond.

Yes the ADAT is connected with 2 cables toslink light pipe for having correct sync.

I was a longtime Cubase user and I love the way Cubase has to build up like a hardware studio.
It is very logic and handsome.
Logic is a bit different but after 20 Minutes I got it.
Open a new project in logic and type 12 for 12 audio tracks. They appear with the inputs 1 to 12.
Then activate input monitor button on each channel and I can easily see where signals arrive.
I have to do a test with every input on the babyface to figure out where the routing goes.
I just did confuse me a lot when having the microphonee number 1 is the input number 3 in Logic.
I think it will work after learning it.

Well, I have sorted one thing and found other things.

The intrument input on the Babyface is a real hardware input but in Totalmix it has not its own input channel.

I discovered that the instrument channel is merged together with the AN2 !

If I want to record 2 Mics and a Guitar, 3 tracks simultanously this is not possible then ?

The hardware offers inputs and the software is not able to keep them seperate ? Not good !

And then I see there are buttons 48V on each Adat input channel in totalmix.
Why ? And for what ?

Click on the spanner/wrench on the channel and it will open up. There you will see stereo is active. Click on this to disable stereo and TotalMix will show as separate channels. This works on all channels

But not the instrument input. This one does not show up seperate. It is together with channel An2 one channel.
The instrument button just activate the instrumnet hi-z.
Am I wrong ?
And still the question : what is the 48V button on each adat channel doing ?
There is also an Inst- button next to the 48V button, I think those are useless and do nothing...?

Is the instrument input on input AN2 also the same situation in the Babyface Pro ?

Would be great if it is better there.

Ok so I don’t quite get what you are seeing. On my Babyface Pro FS along the top I get an1 an2 an3 an4. I only have phantom power showing on an1 and 2. as and adat do not have phantom power or input gain. I get a spanner on all these and can make them all stereo or combinations of stereo and mono.

Middle row also named the same but these are like busses. In fact I name mine bus1 to bus6. Bottom all outputs. Can be in control room and can have loopback enabled. Do you get anything like this? Can you add pictures or put a picture in Dropbox so we can see what you can see as it sounds very odd unless your interface is a lot different.

This is an old Babyface where input 3 shares Mic/Line input 2.

The ADAT channels don't have 48V buttons unless you activated Aux support via TM FX Settings.
