Topic: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

I am using my interface with an iPad and TotalMix on the iPad.
Each time my volume is peaking on input 1 (acoustic instrument mic) the Babyface Pro FS is resetting itself automatically.
Is there a way to prevent this to happen - safety setting ?
Thanks in advance

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Can you do a test with input 2 ?
Same Mic, same instrument, same recording app etc., just connect the xlr cable to the other input and see if this reset still happen ?
What exactly is this reset doing ?
Is it a reset of the faders in Totalmix and the loudspeakers are silent suddenly ?

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Same behaviour with input 2
The babyface is phili ally resetting (short power down and up)
A few seconds after this reset Totalmix rests with the “ iPad wheel” turning a short instant

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Ouch !
What are your input gain settings ?
Did you try a total reset in Totalmix ? I recommend to do one.

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Yes I did a total reset on totalmix
Y use phantom power and am on 25 for the gain

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Not much left to try out...
May you have another mic ?
If you just lower the gain ?

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Yeah I tried all that already,
I don’t understand what is happening.
I will try tomorrow with a mic which doesn’t require the phantom power just in case. But I need this phantom power.
I was thinking that I had missed some kind of safety protection but I hadn’t found anything about it.
Thanks for your kind help

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

What mic is this one that need phantom power ?
A small electret mic for clip at the trompet ?

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Yes it is a SD System Mic that I use for my saxophones

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

But not a small electret

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

I see. it is a big electret one.
I highly recommend to do a test with another condenser mic.

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Yes I will do it tomorrow, but I have been using this Mike extensively since more than five years in very different configurations (including with UCX) without any issue. I will try also feeding it with a battery in the preamp as it is an option.
I thank you again for your help and will let you know the results

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

So I tested it with a standard mic (shure beta 58), no Phantom power, and the result is the same. If the volume is peaking too much Babyface Pro FS is resetting ...
I tried with the pad and with a higher gain same result.
There is something than I don’t understand , is there a defined peak value ? Or is it a defect of my device ?

The only other thing that I have not tested is to put the device in standalone mode, currently it gets the current from the iPad. But I need the right adapter to try it

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

May you have a keyboard to make a line input test aswell ?
Would be interesting to see if every input has that issue...?
I think the peak value is defined by the hardware and firmware.
i never heard that a interface offers a manual setting of a peak value as it always should be the maximum possible signal level.
A red light and bad looking waveforms in the DAW is the result, but a interface reset should not happen during a recording session just because one of the talents is too loud.
If every input has that issue, then you should contact the RME support, I think.

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

You need to test with something other than the ipad. It sounds as if the ipad's internal power management might be faulty.

Do you have a powered USB hub handy?

Or use the BF with a power supply. Clear power case here.

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Thanks for your answers, yes I want to clear the power issue.
I need to find the right power unit for the BF first.

Thanks,
Ordered already

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

That was a problem of alimentation.
I tested today with the external power unit and the BF is working normally, no more reset on audio inputs peaks.
I would anyway be interested to understand why when the current is coming from the iPad it is not working well ?

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

Does Apple guarantee the amount of current the BF Pro needs from an iPad? Of course not.

Thanks for you answer, I can formulate my question differently and more precisely; the BF is sold as class compliant and it works with an iPad and totalmix, does RME has tested a normal ( at least for me) configuration where the iPad is alimented through an iPad hub and the standard apple alimentation ?
Thanks in advance for your help

Re: Babyface ProFS resetting automatically on input volume peaks ?

The BF Pro works on the big iPad Pro and the smaller Pro for us. But nobody can guarantee that it will always do. You can use a powered hub or the power supply and it will.

It was my setup !
Anyway I will now use it with the dedicated power unit
