Topic: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

System: HP ZBook 14u G6 Laptop

Hat jemand Tipps für die beiden Probleme?

Viele Grüße, Paul

Yes, thanks. I thought that was clear with "latest driver" used. That included both the win driver and the firmware (ver. 130) as well :-)

EDIT: I just disabled USB-power saving -- which should not have kicked in, as the laptop was still running. But even when I never had a problem with that with my old audio interface with the power savings enabled. So I guess the problem lies somewhere else.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Danke für die Antwort. Wirklich happy bin ich damit jedoch nicht.

1) Knistern / Knattern

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

1) knistern / knacken

Since firmware 200 the Babyface operates in three different modes: driver-based USB 2, stand-alone mode, and Class Compliant mode. The latter describes a standard that is natively supported by operating systems like Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. No proprietary drivers are required, the device will be directly recognized when CC mode is activated.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

CC-mode is not for Windows, this was my first thought, but after having a look into the user manual page 89 I decided to ask you about the firmware.
The user manual has a chapter about CC-mode on windows, I was very surprised, it makes no sense.
The problems here with crackeling noise looks to me like typical windows Pc problem.
If you have the chance to connect the Babyface to a Mac and do some tests you probably can sort out the Babyface as issue.
Sorry for making a mess in your thread, latest driver is also known as problem, by the date of publishing it's not always the latest driver.

During editing the statement that it doesn't work seem to have been lost, I will add this again. The currrent text is there to show how a (wrong) CC mode setting looks like under Windows.

Thanks Waedi. It's not a big problem that CC-mode does not work for Windows -- just surprising, because then I do not understand what "class compliant" means when a device which should work with the "class compliant" drivers (which Windows offers AFAIK) does not.

Regarding the crackling noise I'll monitor the situation further. I use two laptops. The crackling appeared on the newer one (much more powerful then the old one). On my almost 10 year old laptop the Babyface so far works without any glitches. Still strange that I got sometimes crackling on the newer laptop, but never had issues like that with my old audio interface (EMU 0404 USB). I even dit not adjust the USB energy settings on the older laptop and have set a much lower buffer size there. So I see no reason / explanation where the crackling comes from and even I got a bluescreen (on the new laptop) which is very likely related to the Babyface (driver)...!?

Regarding Mac. I'm personally glad I do not use Macs any longer (Apple changes the OS too fast -- without sensible reason and destroys compatibilty software and hardware wise and they are too arrogant IMO) and have currently no access to one.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

I wouldn’t use cc mode for windows. Why would you when the driver is more flexible and works great. I have three PCs setup now. An old 920 i7. A i9 9900k which is my newest and I was given a xenon server 3.3ghz. All three work perfectly with the Babyface Pro fs. A newer faster pc can still have bottle necks and bios problems. Also if having problems I would install windows again fresh. I found after a while and after multiple interfaces and drivers windows get progressively worse. I used to build my own PCs but these days companies who test components for audio workstations put them together cheap (I have used in the uk SCAN and CCL who both allow customisation) this way you get something that is supported and should work. I would never buy an off the shelf pc or laptop for doing pro audio work.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Thanks mkok for your input.

I am a bit surprised about the answer. I explained that it is not a deal-breaker not to have CC mode working on Windows. But I simply do not understand what CC-mode means when it shows that the device is not fully class-compliant (compatible). Please read the post of Matthias (quoted by me above) when introducing CC-mode for the original Babyface which clearly shows that my expectation that "class-compliant" would mean just that is nothing strange! I also mentioned two use cases where CC-mode would be beneficial to have under windows.

Last I do never reinstall Windows, but take care not to clutter up my installation. I run my windows installations for years without any problems. And why should I not expect the Babyface to work flawless on a laptop which never made any similar problems with  another audio interface (old EMU 0404 USB, in that case even with drivers never meant for Windows 10)!? In my case now I even can not make a new windows installation, because that laptop is a company laptop, but where I still need to use the Babyface for various tasks! I am not doing Pro audio work, but still want / need to benefit from Babyface/TM features and of course expect to be able to use a "rock-solid" audio device on a computer which otherwise does also work totally fine with audio tasks with the simple built in soundcard or an external USB audio sound card.

In addition I read the manual, searched the forum here and on the internet in general and followed all tips - still had occasional crackling appear. :-(

I find it strange that the RME followship is in such a way that it appears that it must not be questioned if there could be a problem with an RME driver!? ;-)

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

I understand. Have you tried running latencyMon to see if it can identify a problem? This let’s you know if your computer should be capable of audio streaming. I agree it is odd that you old interface works but not the rme. As far as CC goes I thought it was designed for Apple hardware. I know my zoom l-20 only mentions cc mode for connecting to Apple devices

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Some questions upfront
Do you run on battery with the Laptop or does it also happen when the Laptops PSU is active ?
Is the BBF Pro powered by USB bus or do you use a PSU ?

Regarding the Windows installation
What release of Win10 ? 20H2 ?
Is this a system preinstalled from factory ? Some preinstallations are pretty bad.
Some tools are programmed bad and can have impact on the performance.
Typically such add-on tools to check for BIOS or driver updates, fan control, battery control.
I know this from a friends Lenovo Laptop, the factory installation sucked performance much, so that even the mouse moved reluctantly. And the built-in SSD chip which should act as Hibernation and Harddisk accelerator was badly installed. Missing driver and wrong sizing to be able to perform both tasks and to speed up disk accesses.
Did you use tools like O&O Win10 Shutup to disable not required background services and transfer of telemetry data / user behaviour ?

Before making any changes to the system:

a) Try to find out with which simple reproduceable steps you can trigger the issue to be able to measure, whether a certain change solved the issue or how much better or worse things became by this. It needs to be reproduceable and measurable to come to good findings and solutions.

b) Make a backup (disk image) of the windows installation first, recommended here is Macrium Reflect 7.3, do not get 8.0 it's too fresh was just released and has the typical ".0 release" issues.

As mkok noticed: measurings with LatencyMon can be very useful should this have to do with certain drivers that block a CPU core for too long.

You could try the following usual things
1. Check in the RME driver settings whether you have USB transport errors.
2. Try a different USB cable for comparison to be on the save side, that this is no cable problem (unlikely here but try)
Check cables and connectors has always been a good advice in the long history of IT..
3. try all USB ports on your PC to catch all possibilities (ports from chipset, ports from 3rd party USB chip)
4. does it make a difference if you use a higher ASIO buffersize?
5. check whether the energy profile "High Performance" gives more stability
6. make adjustments to the energy profile:
    - disable Diashow
    - disable selective USB power saving
7. if running USB bus powered, then try whether a power supply gives more stability
8. If Destop PC (here "Intel BIOS notation", for AMD the naming is different=
try disabling C-States (either disable or set to C0/C1)
try disabling EIST to achieve a stable non changing clock, but set TURBO then you get usuall 100-200 MHz higher clock
9. Disable CPU core parking for the power profile (can be performed differently, easiest with ParkControl from Bitsum)
10. Give the Processes a fix & longer time quantum to work more efficiently on all processes, to reduce context switches
In the enhanced system settings change Processor scheduling to "Customize optimal performance for background services"

Some of these tips address hopefully the specific problem, some are generally useful. I would in a 1st round only try whether ONE of these options make a difference to get an idea whether changes in a certain area change, mitigate or even solve the issue.

But its not always guaranteed, that a single change does the trick, in the next round I would perform all changes, sometimes the sum of all changes solve an issue.

In a bad case of luck your Laptop does not work well.

The difference with such a RME interface is
- has usually a higher amount of channels, so more audio data needs to be transported per time interval
- RME uses potentially other more performant USB transfer modes and something in the laptop does not perform this well
because also chipsets can have issues ..

Create a vanilla reference installation with minimum amount of drivers and software and compare ...
Either on a separate external SSD with only the Microsoft drivers and the most important drivers for the laptop
- chipset driver
- keyboard / mousepad driver
- USB3 driver (if any needed)
- network drivers LAN/WLAN
- display driver
- RME driver

If you have a quick backup disk then you can also quickly change between two different Windows installation by quickly restoring the one or the other disk image. Macrium Reflect can do this very well.
Macrium Reflect has here a very unique feature called Rapid Delta Restore.
On my system it takes only 4 minutes to restore changes between today and yesterday on a 1TB SSD filled with 700GB data. A full restore takes otherwise 1h15, so this saves me 1h10 !! It's a great feature.
Also very useful to reliably get rid of installed software that turns out to be problematic or that you do not want.

Good luck, something like this is always a nasty problem and Windows as well as Apple are not designed as real-time operating system. BIOS and driver quality is always challenging for audio related processes with near-realtime requirements. He it seems to be even a special case, as this seems to happen over time. So I am curious whether it has something to do with Energy settings and USB power saving settings or to get a dedicated PSU for the BBF Pro or not ...

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Thanks ramses and mkok for the ideas to solve the issue.

What strikes me is that my pretty old private laptop has no problems with audio dropouts, while only the much newer and faster machine has problems. I even did not "optimize" any of the mentioned settings on my old laptop and everything runs fine there. I only experience dropouts so far on the newer laptop.

But then it's strange that with my old sound card I never had any dropouts with the exact same configuration. Power could indeed be the issue, because the old sound card had an external power supply. _But_ when a power problem would be the cause I would experience the crackling effects also when using my old laptop - which is not the case! Both laptops run on AC and not battery. I connected a power supply which fits for the Babyface, but the connection is not o.k. there, so I can not test if that would make a difference, but don't think so. BTW the same power supply makes a solid connection with other devices -- so the connector in the Babyface seems "strange" not to make a solid connection here. But that aside...

I ran LatencyMon on the new laptop now and it reported everything to be fine. But after about 10 minutes that changed and I got the message

Conclusion: Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as drop outs, clicks or pops. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates.

The problems appear here

Highest measured interrupt to process latency (ups): 117336,40

But this is strange why this did not affect audio output with my EMU 0404 USB card!?

BTW, I see now errors reported in the Fireface USB settings dialog (Errors: 0/5) - changing the buffer size does not make a difference.

I'll look for CPU throttling and see if that changes anything.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

rpnfan wrote:

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

https://forum.rme-audio.de/search.php?a … r_id=32977

CC-Mode wäre hier u.a. hilfreich.

EDIT:
@ramses: Thanks for the many suggestions! :-) I see I missed to test one option ("background process optimization"). I just have enabled that and will see if that fixes the problem. Hard to tell, because I need to wait till / if I get problems, because they turn up so randomly -- after hours and sometimes after minutes.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Hallo rpnfan,

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Hallo Angel,

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Despite following those tips posted above (thanks for taking the time Ramses and the others) the errors still occur.

The audio driver "hangs" sort of. I checked and _no_ errors are reported in the Fireface USB settings. The problem is the sound is distorted ('bit crushing' the correct expression for that!?).

And again when I change the audio output from "Speakers (Babyface Pro)" to another output of the Babyface, it does not matter which, for example ADAT/SPDF, the audio output is not distorted any longer. As soon as I switch back to "Speakers (Babyface Pro)" the audio output is distorted again.

This is to me a clear sign that the driver must be involved somehow, because if the PC configuration / USB bus load or whatever would be the cause alone the distortion would appear on all output channels. But I can switch back and forth between distortion on "Speakers" and no distortion on the other outputs.

I have made a video with the distorted sound and showing that this is fixed on the other output channels and could upload that if that is helpful.

The only fix working is disconnecting the Babyface from USB and reconnecting. Again with _nothing_ changed otherwise on the PC side. So this is another indication that the driver (and / or Babyface firmware) _must_ be the problem or at least part of the problem!

https://youtu.be/d0unb4zTB1E

Here the upload of the video. It's a bit silent, as I recorded that at night (so low volume) just with the mobile phone.

UPDATE:

Unfortunately I have to report that the exact same problem has appeared now on my other computer (the older laptop). There are no error messages shown. The problem is the same that the sound is distorted on the "Speakers (Babyface Pro)" output. I have not found a work-around so far to reset that, besides restarting the Babyface! :-(

UPDATE 2 - Addition (2021-06-07): I already had the impression that the "stuck" audio seems to be slowed down more or less. See also the video linked above. But I was not sure. I just again experienced the distorted audio and found that indeed the complete timing is wrong then. I'll upload a second video where one sees that (in that case) the time is stretched by a factor of about 4.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Additional information / question:

In the manual there are the following statements which slightly differ between the English and German version of the manual (see page 19, first paragraph):

This does sound like the Babyface cannot be used as the general audio output device for Windows at all -- that's how I experience it indeed now! Which would be ridiculous of course.

Although the
Babyface Pro comes with extensive support for system audio, setting it to be the Default Device for playback could cause problems when working with ASIO.

In contrast here the statement is "only" that problems with ASIO programs can appear when the default system audio device is the Babyface. That still would not be nice, but something one could live with / work around.

On page 20 it says:

Selecting the Babyface Pro to be used as system playback device is against our recommendations, as professional interfaces should not be disturbed by system events. Make sure to re-assign the selection after usage or to disable any system sounds

This statement is clear on it's own. If that is the case then disabling system sounds should be sufficient already -- which would be fine (I have those disabled anyways), but the statement in the German manual suggests different that there are general problems.

What is totally missing in the manual (at least I have not found that information) is how "Speakers (RME Babyface Pro" as an audio device under windows differs (if it does) to the hardware-named outputs like (AN1/2, AS1/2, ADAT....)? I have the idea that this possibly different behavior of "Speakers (RME Babyface Pro)" could be the cause of the problems I experience?

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

The passage from the german manual is a bit outdated technically. Still, you wouldn't want sytem pings and beeps to disturb while editing, but that's just a general recommendation and has nothing to do with the problems described here. "Speakers" is just Windows nomenclature and does not affect device behaviour.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

I bought a brand new BabyFace Pro FS last week for my Windows 10 PC at home. It replaces an SPL Crimson which I have been very happy with til now.
The reason why I wanted to make this "upgrade" is because we have been using a UFX II at our band rehearsal studio over the past couple of years, and as a result I have become familiar with TotalMix FX.
I wanted to have exactly this software at my home PC for its ease of use and massive functionality, when say recording a guitar overdub at home onto a full band track recorded at rehearsal. Or adding a bit of midi synth.

When I first set up the BabyFace, I installed the driver as you should first, and then tried to attach the included USB cable to the back of my PC. Problem: 1 metre is not long enough from my desktop to the USB port on the PC tower on the floor. So I found another longer USB cable lying around, apparently a good one, and tried that.

I got some terrible clicks and ticking noises, sounds like an HDD that is unable to read its disk and keeps trying to initialize. Tick - tick - tick. Tried various USB ports on the PC, same problem.
After multiple reboots I got it working and was delighted to start making use of all the TotalMix functionality here at home. But then I started getting dropouts in the audio while watching YouTube, and the sound wouldn`t come back til I rebooted the PC, which is a pain, despite still showing signal levels in both TotalMix and on the BabyFace.
Over this rainy weekend I went into troubleshooting mode, to find out the problem. Guess what it was? The USB cable of course! I laid my tower PC on its side and raised it off the floor so the RME`s solid 1m USB cable comfortably reaches the BabyFace on my desk, and since then, my audio has been perfect. Rock solid.

Maybe a consideration for those having these types of problem: RME USB devices require a QUALITY cable-

Your problem sounds different than mine. I tried different USB cables btw and am using the original one now.
The problems I have do not appear always, but random. Your dropouts and clicks were always there?

As long as there are no CRC errors during transmission and the cable is not too long or faulty, the cable quality does not matter. See / check driver settings dialog whether there are transport errors shown. You need to keep the window open (at least for the MADIface driver this is the case and .
Maybe it was a pure occasion that after changing the cable the issue didn't come back.
Some reasons are mentioned in the manual see ch 28.3.

Your explanation here is a third variation which is not clear from the manual. So, does setting the default audio device to "Loudspeaker - Babyface Pro"
a) not work reliably (that's the statement of the german manual)
b) not work reliable when using ASIO audio (english manual)
c) is well working, but one just should deactivate system sounds to be sure not to get those sounds when not wanted (while recording and the like)  ???

"Speakers" is just Windows nomenclature and does not affect device behaviour

What is then the difference between choosing the different RME outputs? All outputs give a signal on the headphone / line outs (3/4), where I have my loudspeakers connected too.

This does not make sense IMO. Why can you be sure that the interface hardware / firmware and / or driver is faultless?

1. Latencymon reports problems on one PC, that's right. But then I would expact latency problems (which I dont have). But instead the audio is distorted and the audio driver seems to hang sort of, because resetting the Babyfacer or switching to another Babyface output gets the audio correct again.
2. On the second PC I now had the same problem (so far once). No errors reported from Fireface USB and also no problems with Latencymon reported.
3. Even when a problem does not appear often it is not stated that this must be a PC problem. One reason: the user base of RME interfaces is likely relatively small for the usage of WDM audio. Most will use it only or mainly with ASIO applications. So problems with Windows WDM audio can be hidden possibly longer.

Here a video which shows very clear the problematic behavior. Note that the audio timestretch does not seem to be consistent. In that example it was about a forth of actual speed:

https://youtu.be/Zg95TNaGooI

So, what can I do now after following all the suggestions here and in the manual?

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

EDIT: I just tested to play audio via ASIO. This works without any problems, while I can reproduce the audio problems in Firefox. I then double-checked if I get the same problems for video playback in Chrome. I don't get those problems there! When I use another program while Firefox has the problems I get the problems in every WDM program, but not in ASIO-programs. As soon as I close Firefox the problems stop in the other programs.

So as a first summary I have the impression that Firefox in combination with the Babyface driver makes the problems. Never had similar problems with my old audio interface, nor with the integrated Audio driver (Realtek). So I think now that the application (Firefox) is the main cause -- possibly in combination with the RME driver? Possibly it's a Firefox-only problem, or it can be that other programs are affected as well. I'll monitor if I get problems when Firefox is not running. I'll switch to a different browser for a week -- that should be enough to experience if the problem creeps in at other places as well.

You should have enough information now IMO to see that is quite likely if not already clear that the interface and / or firmware and / or driver must be part of the problem.

I again tested on my own laptop with LatencyMon and let it run for half an hour with no problems reported. I also get no errors reported in the USB fireface settings. Still I experience the same problems randomly on this laptop like on the other one. When I change the audio output of the Babyface this has influence on the problem. In addition to my findings that the problems seem to show some correlation with fixed factors in slowing down the audio I now found out that indeed the USB fireface settings have influence on the problem experienced.

Changing the buffer size _can_ cause a fixed factor of slow-down to the audio (and video if connected). I typically have the buffer size on 96 or 48 samples on this laptop, which gave no problems / error messages or the like. Please note that the problem comes out of nowhere, but never so far occurred during playback. It always starts at one point when I restart audio or start audio in another application. It might be influenced by factors like computer going to standby-mode, but I am not sure about that and is is surely not limited to a standby-problem, because it can happen also at other times.

I have uploaded two further videos which show that. I play a part of a video where you can see a running timer, so one can clearly see that the audio is delayed by certain factors. Mostly changing the buffer size will change the audio-delay -- but sometimes changes in the buffer size will make no difference. It seems the application does not get the correct timing information from the audio driver (that's my guess, not a technical statement -- it's RME's task to find out the exact cause IMO!).

See the two new videos (third and forth) in the playlist:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arzopo3 … mp;index=3

Restarting the application which experiences the broken audio output can "reset" everything, but still it can happen that I can change the buffer size without problems, or it can happen that changing the buffer size again introduces problems. To further narrow down the problem cause I set the buffer size to 256 and then restarted Firefox where I played the video (see links below) again. Then it worked fine, while before it only ran good at a buffer of 48 (most of the time, see also in the second video posted today). When I then changed to a buffer size of 48 the video was speed-up. But after playing around a bit, stopping and restarting the video and changing buffer sizes when the video was stopped, changed at some point the "preferred" buffer size to 48 again (which means that then the audio was playing correct, while higher buffers sizes delayed the audio/video). Note that the problem is not for a single application only, but different applications are all affected from that problem. My guess is that it's a problem in the WDM driver of the Babyface, that the communication can get messed up, by whatever (standby-mode, maybe also higher CPU or bus load at a given time -- but not sure about that). In any way this should not break the audio communication like it does now.

I have so far not experienced a problem when using ASIO. That could imply that indeed ASIO is working fine and the problem is in the WDM driver part. Or it could be that this is because I mostly use applications which do not offer ASIO support. This is a difference for sure to the typical Babyface users, who most likely will use ASIO -- can very well be the reason that problems with the WDM driver have not popped up more frequently!

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Unfortunately it is not a problem which is isolated to Firefox. I just had similar problems again when Firefox was not running, but I changed the buffer size, while S-Gear was open. That messed up the audio again. Closing all programs which have audio and restarting them fixed the problem. So with Firefox there seems to be a higher chance of problems and I think there is a bug in Firefox. But the RME driver seems to have a problem with the buffer settings. Either a bug / problem in the driver itself or a missing (or not fully working) error handling of the driver in case the audio application screws something up somehow and / or a communication problem between the driver and the application?

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Note, that not every application is able to support ASIO buffer size changes while they are running.
DAWs like Cubase usually can, but not every application with ASIO support.
Example: MusicBee music player.
At the beginning the application was not even possible to change the sample rate if you have mixed music content.
Then the author was so kind to fix that.
But MusicBee stops playing audio and stays stuck if you change the ASIO buffersize during runtime of the program.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

There is no "error handling". No audio driver can fix what comes from the application, or whatever goes wrong there.
Are the issues you demonstrate with Youtube playback reproducible in Chrome or Edge?

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

The problem in that form is related to Firefox and not appearant in Chrome like already explained above.

"Error handling" is needed in every software and surely also for drivers:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window … exceptions

https://www.usenix.org/conference/atc16 … tation/bai

Of course the audio driver can not stop a program from reacting "wrong" and can not hinder if the audio output is distorted within that program. But a driver should not get affected in such a way that _other_ programs show the same problem in the audio output. I think that a proper error handling should be able to handle that situation gracefully.

See also please that Firefox is _one_ example what I found where I now can reproduce the error any time. But the problem also appeared with other applications (even ASIO, like S-Gear -- see description above).

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

I assume that if your ideas of "error handling" worked the way you imagine for audio transfer, our developers would have found time to implement that at some point in the past twenty years.

I'm afraid I still see no reason to assume there is any general issue here beyond your individual system setup. To assume it could be that there's just insufficient number of users doing WDM playback for such issues to have been notices isn't very realistic, sorry.

That said, I can happily change buffers while playing YT on Firefox with my rather slowish Acer laptop here without even so much as a hiccup.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

I can also change buffer sizes _while_ playing YT on Firefox without problems. Can you or others please test on Windows:

1) Play a YouTube video in Firefox
2) stop the playback
3) change the buffer size in the Fireface settings
4) continue to play the video
→ is the sound distorted (delayed or speed up -- depending on the change of the buffer size)? Or do you have no problems?

It is unlikely that two very different computers experience the exact same problem when the cause would be "in" the computers alone. One of the computers does not report errors in the Fireface settings (the other only sometimes). You also have not explained why resetting the Babyface would make a difference (or would be needed at all) when the problem would only be on the computer side!

P.S.: I did not assume that fewer users use a Babyface for day-to-day Windows usage, but gave just an example what _could_ be reason why some bugs do not show up earlier or more often.

You stated that there is no error handling in device (here audio) drivers. This is not correct and it does not matter for how long RME writes drivers. What kind of error handling is well possible for an audio driver and what lies outside the possibilities in relation with the OS  and / or other applications I do not know. But it's just wrong to state there would not be the need for error handling the code for drivers as with any other well written software!

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Vague ideas of what "error correction" is/means or might/should/could do in the context of audio drivers really won't help here. No audio driver can "correct" or fix performance related audio playback issues or the like. That's simply not something that can be expected.

As for the issue with buffer size changes, I can (not totally reliably) reproduce it in some cases (like when changing to a lower value), but that's Windows audio getting confused, not something about an individual computer's performance. But also not something that a driver can "fix" or correct just like that.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Good to hear that you can reproduce the problem. For me it is also not 100 % of the time behaving exactly the same (I have described that already). But more often than not I can reproduce the problem. Please note that Firefox video playing is one example, but like explained before I also got similar problems when changing the buffer size when the ASIO software S-Gear (which is bundled in the US with the Babyface) was running. The "fix" to set the buffer size to the value where it was first, does often help, but not always. There seems to be some sort of correlation / connection between which programs access the audio drivers at a given moment.

"error handling" (or often also called "exception handling") is not a vague idea of mine. Please talk to your software colleauges so you can understand better what is meant here. It's not an obscure idea of fixing errors, but taking precautions in the software code for certain situations which can appear. A good error / exception handling could possibly prevent to let the audio driver "hang up" like it does now.

The informatino about the buffer size limited to 256 samples for WDM might be worth to add to the handbook. I have searched this forum and the internet quite a lot, have read the manual and followed the recommendations to "fix" my computer. I did not find that information about possible buffer (change) causing problems -- would be good to add to the FAQ section in the handbook.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Hello!

@rpnfan
I can play my (off-line) games, fine, with a WDM Device, even at 32samples@48KHz, with my DF Usb!

Your "problems" seem to lie when you are using apps that require streaming. Youtube, facebook etc. It's, only, logical to assume that you cannot change buffer size, without experiencing some kind of drop-out or glitch, when someone uses these kind of apps.

These apps, also, use their own buffers in the background. Even if you close the app, it takes a bit for the buffer to get emptied. That process requires an x amount of CPU. That amount of CPU results in extra "burden" for the CPU to process. And when you have a small buffer setting in the audio driver settings, this might result in an audio "hick-up".

What I 'm trying to say is, that it is application specific! It depends on how each app is coded! There doesn't need to be any specific mention, in the manual, for that. It's simple logic, I think!

In Reaper, for example, I change buffer sizes, all the time! 128 when recording my guitar tracks with IRs, 1024 when mixing and mastering!
In the middle of the project! And not a single glitch!

Try changing buffer sizes when the "industry standard" Pro-Tools are running....

So, it's not something that RME could/should fix!

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

First thanks for taking the time to comment. Although I am very much suprised about your statements. It seems you have not really read what I posted.

I never talked about low buffer size itself and drop-outs or whatever. My problem is a real one and does not need to be set in ""! You missed that I have not glitches or drop-outs, but that the audio channel is completly messed up and audio plays either too slow or too fast, depending on the direction of the change in the buffer size.  You also missed that the problem does not appear only with WDM applications and also not only for streaming applications.

You confirm that changing the buffer size can and should be possible.

Regarding the applications I use. I do not use Pro-Tools. Not everybody is using an audio device for similar applications.

And of course RME cannot fix problems which appear in a non-RME application. But I have seen in other threads that more people experience problems when changing buffer sizes. That is an indication that there can be a problem with the RME driver in that regard.

And even when a non-RME program is not well-behaved a well written driver can somehow deal with such a situation. For example could a driver reset itself after experiencing that something went wrong -- even if that was caused somewhere else outside the driver or in interaction of a programm with the driver. I think that should be possible here too, because disconnecting the Babyface (thus resetting the driver in that way) can cure the problem.

You 're welcome!
You 're right, I didn't re-read the whole thread, because some portion is in German and I don't speak German, unfortunately!

Just to be clear, using the "" wasn 't ironic! I, just, wanted to point that I didn 't think that it 's a BF Pro 's driver problem. Not that it 's not a problem for you!

rpnfan wrote:

I mentioned Pro-Tools, because many big studios and composers use them. I, just, wanted to say that even with that kind of a scale of an application, error handling is not tackled well. The issues you are experiencing are application-specific!

I, actually, think that these issues are windows or Firefox related!

For example, in your video, if you had used TotalMixFX for changing Outputs(routing Software Playback AN1+2 to SPDIF Outputs), the video would have been played back, normally!

I don't know if that is possible, because how could a driver be aware that a video's playback rate is slowed down or whatever other issue? If it 's the fault of an application and/or system configuration dependent?
The driver is not self-aware of how it 's used! smile

If that kind of thing were possible, we'd have implemented it long ago. But that's not something an audio driver can do. The driver as such doesn't know whats "wrong".

It's not only that the video playback is too slow. Also any audio output is then distorted. And resetting a driver (restarting the service) is nothing which can not be done.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exception_handling
Some exceptions, especially hardware ones, may be handled so gracefully that execution can resume where it was interrupted.

I do not know if that is easy to achieve here or not, but it's surely not something which is impossible. When I reset the Babyface everything works fine. So resetting _is_ an option. The question is if in the case of problems when changing the buffer size there is an exception thrown or not. If yes the fix is very close. If not then an alternative approach would be needed. For example possibly the communication to the Babyface is also not normal after the error occurs and can be tested by the driver!?

What about the other people who also experienced problems which seem to be related to changing buffer sizes!?

I hope you add the question / answer (buffer size changes -- effects) as one possible problem to the handbook like suggested. That would have saved me much time instead of trying to "fix" a PC problem which was not there (I am talking about this problem described here and not random dropouts which I understand can happen with a not well-configured PC).

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

I would like to hear an update what is done to solve the "change-buffersize problem"?

In the mean time I tested two other lower priced interfaces. None of both experience the same problem. So for me it is clear that the RME driver is not working as it should. Or why would it be "o.k." that the RME driver causes artifacts which other audio interface drivers don't!?

For reference I tested those two interfaces, which work flawless and none of them created any artifacts described above which I experience with the Babyface.

Re: Babyface Pro FS - Probleme (knistern / knattern)

Both these do not support multiclient WDM, multiclient ASIO and mixed multiclient ASIO/WDM with multiple I/O channels. For that reason they also don't (or don't have to) initialize their WDM devices on sample rate change.

We will definitely not change the way our driver works, sorry.

Resetting is not impossible, but for the driver to know or detect when a signal is "distorted" is not possible. Otherwise it might suddenly reset with audio signals that are intentionally distorted or sound as if they might be.

I see no reason to assume that the driver *causes* these issues. If so, it would have been noticed earlier...

I can somehow follow the first argument. The second is a very strange assumption. That would mean that after a while no bugs will be found!? Sure that's less likely, but surely not impossible. I do not think that most users change buffer sizes sooooo often. So that can well be an explanation that this might not pop up earlier. Also not everybody is reporting a problem and / or taking so much time to find out the reasons, like I (had) to do till now...
May I remind you that you were absolutely sure that the problem lies somewhere in my computers or their configuration, while I found several hints which suggested otherwise and it turned out that I was right that it is _not_ the computers or their configuration!?

MC wrote:

Thanks for the explanation. I have the impression "we" might be getting closer to an answer. I was of course not asking to change drivers to support less functions! I experience a problem with an RME interface which I do not experience with other interfaces (3 tested so far). Of course one is expecting less / no problems with an RME interface when they are advertised with  "rock-solid" drivers. When the experienced problems are the result of a feature (one wants) and not a bug that needs to be explained and possibly also described in the manual and / or an FAQ. 1. Where it comes from 2. Solutions to solve it and / or if that is not possible for the end-user 3. name work-arounds or making aware when to expect those (potential) problems.

So do I understand it correct that you think that the problem occurs due a message the RME driver sends to an WDM application? Please note that you were talking about sample rate changes. This was never the case. All applications are set to use the same sample rate and never changed otherwise. What I change when experience the problem is changing the buffer size!

The Behringer driver supports multiclient Asio applications. I have not checked that for the Tascam interface and I do not have the two interfaces at hand now to confirm that although.
One difference between the RME and Tascam / Behringer drivers seems to be that the RME driver settings are applied both to ASIO and WDM applications, while it seems that the settings from the Tascam / Behringer drivers are only applied to ASIO applications!? If that is true why is it to be somehow "expected" that the buffer size changes done in the RME driver can or might mess up the audio playback in a WDM application? Where would that need to be fixed? Why does the problem occur most of the time (for me at least), but not always?

Second please note that I found the problem to be (mostly) reproducible with Firefox (thus a WDM application), but I had similar problems with S-Gear (Asio application) as well (see report above). Last not least I have found several posts from others which also seem to be related to changing the buffer size. So it seems very much possible to me that there is somewhere something not o.k. with the driver related to the buffer size switching which can cause regular or (more likely) random errors under specific circumstances.
