Topic: Recording a DAW session in Camtasia - no sound

Hi Everyone,

I watched the available tutorials about this topic, but my efforts to solve this problem were to no avail.
I want to screen record a session in Nuendo with the latest Camtasia recorder. I think I do understand how the routing in TotalMix FX works but whatever I try, there is no audio signal available to record in Camtasia.
When I playback a YT video or playback something from Soundcloud etc.. everything works fine and the audio signal is there.

The Camtasia recorder has only two sound recording options: Microphone (which I don´t use) and System Sound.

Could someone please help me solve this issue and guide me through the proper routing process.

I am on a WIN 10 pc using the latest Nuendo and Camtasia builds, UFX+ is the audio interface.

Re: Recording a DAW session in Camtasia - no sound

If you created a WDM device already for system sound, then
this should be doable by activating loopback and to record from the corresponding input.

Assumed
- your main monitors are attached to AN 1/2 OUT
- WDM device has been created for AN 1/2
- These ports are defined as main input/output in Windows Sound settings

Then activate in TM FX Loopback on HW Output AN 1/2, then the system sound can be recorded at the corresponding input port HW input AN 1/2.

Re: Recording a DAW session in Camtasia - no sound

Thanks Ramses,

here is my setup:

I´m working with headphones only, no monitor system connected.
I have 2 WDM devices active, Analog (1+2) and Analog (3+4)

I´m using two software playback channels in TM FX named DAW (Nuendo) which is AN 1/2 and Media (WIN system sounds) which is AN 3/4

In the windows sound settings, Analog 1+2 is the default playback device and Analog 3+4 the default recoring device. I swapped both but still no sound in Camtasia.
Loopback is activated on every hardware output channel I use.

Re: Recording a DAW session in Camtasia - no sound

Checking out Camtasia
on Mac M1 BigSur
Screenrecording works fine, without interface connected. No routing no settings, but during installation I was forced to give a lot permissions and also allowed to install an additional helper software for the audio capturing of microphone or system sound.
I assume in Windows you have to do the same.
Did it instal such a software ?
May you have to delete the software and run the installer exe again and ensure to allow the special software to get installed.

Thanks for the tip, waedi.

I installed the latest version yesterday (2021) but there is no such helper software for the windows version unfortunately.

Re: Recording a DAW session in Camtasia - no sound

Just to be sure, when start recording there comes a popup window where you have to select and enable system audio for the recording, you switched it ON, yes ?

Re: Recording a DAW session in Camtasia - no sound

No, when I click on record there is no such popup window. It immediately starts recording.
Hmm, I start to believe that v2021 is the issue and this makes me want to uninstall it and intall 2020 again

I've tried Camtasia, and have the same problem as yours, WDM + loopback seems to be useful in some systems, but not suit all. My camtasia only indicated system audio with meters, but no DAW inputs.
I have tried all the methods in OBS too, none of it worked.

But, there is a very powerful plugin called OBS ASIO, it solved all problem.

I can add my microphone from AN1, through ASIO source, to OBS, then I can add my DAW outputs from a loopbacked ADAT1/2(Virtual) to OBS, all the sounds worked, with low latency.

So if possible, I suggest you use OBS, then install this plugin, and they all are free and fun!

Hello!

In TMFX
Select Outputs AN 3/4(third row), by clicking on the channel
Witn AN3/4 selected, raise the fader for Software Playback AN1/2(DAW Outputs, second row)
Also, de-activate Loopback for AN1/2

I think that should do the trick!

Problem
I am unable to record audio from my Audio Stream Input/Output (ASIO) device.

Solution
Camtasia does not support ASIO devices. For a list of audio/webcam compatibility, see this article.

Re: Recording a DAW session in Camtasia - no sound

Yes, and this is the reason why RME provides WDM Devices!
So everyone can use their interfaces with Windows apps that do not support ASIO!

You 're welcome!
Hmm, perhaps Camtasia can only "see" the first two Inputs/Outputs.
Can you try a different test?

- Configure a WDM Device only for AN1/2
- Set Windows Sound to AN1/2 and Windows Record Device to AN1/2
- Set your DAW 's Outputs to AN3/4
- Select Output AN1/2, raise Software Playback AN3/4 (this might not be needed if you 've set AN1/2 as your Main Output in TMFX)
- Activate Loopback for Output AN1/2

Check with Camtasia and please. report back!

Sorry, I somehow don´t get notified when new posts arrive.
I tried what you suggested but without any luck. I´ve contacted Camtasia and waiting for their reply.

You're welcome, I knew Camtasia and used it for awhile, but that was several years ago, then I've got a chance to use OBS, it was opened my eyes. Few days before this post, I've purchased an UFX+ and Elgato Cam link pro(Video capture card), I was trying to make some video, but struggling with Inputs issue, when I've figured out finally, I saw your post, then I've installed Camtasia to see if it fits the same method, but no luck, so I preferred OBS.

I know Camtasia has some great tools to make a demonstration, like arrows, pop ups etc, I will try to figure out how sounds input works, and share with you ASAP.

Thanks! I´m looking forward to your post.
I contacted Techsmith and while I was waiting for their reply, I checked again all my Windows settings and gave the permission to activate the Microphone. This worked (thanks to @waedi, see post #4!!) and finally, the Camtasia recorder got the audio signal from my DAW.
But I´m still not sure if that is the proper way to be honest. Shouldn´t the audio signal from my DAW be routed to the windows sound system?!...

However, now I have the next problem. I can record my DAW session with Camtasia but the audio is stuttering all the time so that it is impossible to work with.
Techsmith support contacted me, I sent them all the specs from my computer and this is their answer:

Thank you for providing that information. Unfortunately, this is one of a few issues that relate to using external audio interfaces. Camtasia was initially designed around utilizing a simple USB connected microphone for audio input. As time has passed, we've seen users with more advanced setups, incorporating external soundcards, mixing boards, and breakout boxes. With a lot of these devices, the signal is being passed into the computer in a way that Camtasia is not set to properly "listen" for. This can result in audio coming in over only a single channel (L/R), garbled/distorted audio, or no recording whatsoever.

One thing that may help would be to set these signals to mix to mono, that may help us better detect the audio from this device. Do you know if you audio interface has the option for this?

So, now I´m completely lost. How can I mix the audio to mono in TotalMix FX? Do I have to do this at all? Audio production in mono?!

Re: Recording a DAW session in Camtasia - no sound

In Totalmix the hardware output channels have a knob "width" set this to zero makes the signal mono.
I have no idea how this should unstotter your music.
Who knows ?

The width knob is only available for the hardware input channels. I can´t find it on the hardware output channels.

See software playback channels, this is also "kind of an output" from application perspective.
hint: and you'll find the width control only on stereo channels ..

Re: Recording a DAW session in Camtasia - no sound

I just installed OBS Studio and made a first test recording. It really performs much better. I had two audio dropouts during the 5 minutes of recording but no comparison to Camtasia. And I didn´t even had to setup any audio settings.
Thanks @smpiggy for the recommendation! I will look closer at the audio settings to eliminate the stuttering completely and then might make the transition.

Ok, thanks.
BTW .. which Xeon CPU ? E5-xxxx?

I ask because of single thread performance .. ASIO buffersize of 1024 should be ok.

If there are audio drops, check with LatencyMon.
Do you have network access through LAN / WLAN while recording ?
Audio issues can happen when accessing LAN, esp WLAN can be problematic.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yes, its really a shame. Their support is giving me only advices how to update my drivers or optimize some settings for audio. Nothing helps of course. My system is already optimized for audio production, they even suggested to not use my RME interface but try an usb plug & play usb interface, whatever this is supposed to be..
Really disappointed, I asked them to close the ticket because they can´t do anything to help. I also felt that they don´t want to admit that the problem is their product and not my system.
But yeah, I´m moving to OBS studio and it looks good so far.
