Topic: UFXII: line input levels too hot - what can I do?

Hi
I want to use the UFXII to digitize vinyl records.
My phono preamp (Linn Uphorik, more info here: http://small.linncdn.com/product-catalo … mation.pdf)
has balanced outputs. The manual states:

“Maximum output voltage 12 V RMS, 17 V Peak, +21.6 dBv (measured signal to screen) Output Impedance: 600 Ω”

My problem: when recording vinyl-tracks with ProTools, levels sometimes exceed 0dB (even with “mellow” Jazz-records, that to me seem not to be the kind of “let’s raise peak levels as close as possible to 0dB and cut the groove as hot as possible”). During normal songs, the meters already are at about -6dB…

Of course, I set the input to Lo Gain, but that’s basically the only thing I can do to lower the levels - faders in TotalMix have no effect on what is fed to ProTools.

Sorry for my stupid question, but I’m completely stuck: but is there no way for me to lower levels in order to prevent clipping?

Maybe a passiv attenuator can help ?

That would be my last resort - I was hoping, I could do the attenuation from within Total Mix. I wlll try to get a measurement disc with a -10dB track and see, where exactly I land at the UFXII regarding input levels - that way, I can determine, what exakt output level I can expect from the preamp (their technical data suprised me a bit)

Did you select the lower of the two gains available in the Linn? If that's not enough then a passive attenuator (-10 dB) would solve it.
