Topic: HDSPe MADI card CH 1-8 Mono ?

Hi guys,
i bought a HDSPe MADI card used around 4 years ago.
I never really had a problem with it, well i had a problem routing it with the totally overkill TotalMix but besides that the Card seems to be working fine.
The card is used just to playback my tunes i create via ableton. Madi goes into a Ferrofish A32 AD/DA then into the Burl B32 for summing and thats it. Lately i changed some channels in a song and realized it sounded weird. Then by switching through all the channels i realized that MADI CH 1-8 are mono. I thought it was a faulty Sub-D Cable, exchanged it but the issue was still there. Then i rerouted the madi channels in the Ferrofish Converter but same story. So its most likely the TotalMix i thought, some wrong settings somewhere, however. Changing everything and resetting it to different states all didnt change that the channels kept mono. Of course i changed the  Stereo Settings, switched Mono/stereo on one setting changed the width on another setting ,used "set all channels to stereo" used "Set inputs mono/outputs stereo" and so on and nothing changed. RESET...

Now im wondering if maybe the card is damaged ?
I mean is there somehow somewhere a function which automatically switches the first 8 channel to mono by default ?

I dont record with that card, i just play straight back Madi ch1 to Analog channel 1 and so on until ch 32. Thats all i need, therefore i wouldnt need any TotalMix as well. PS also in the Matrix, 1/2 is analog one and two and it goes until 32. Nothing is doubled. No Mono Mode clicked. I cant imagine i missed something in the Totalmix software.

Are there sepeate chips which are responsible for lets say ch 1-8 , ch9-16 and so i it would make sense if one is damaged as CH 1-8 are all mono. All others work fine in stereo, You know what i mean, not just ch1+2 or 5+6 are mono straight 1-8.

If the card would be damaged would there be a way to repair it or are these just chips which cant be replaced ?

I had that card running for lots of years in a MacPro.
No problems at all, all channels worked as expected.

Do you use a mac or pc ?
Are you speaking of output channels 1 - 8 or of the input channels ?

You mentioned RESET, was this a total reset performed in Totalmix ?
I would do again.

this wasnt helpful at all and everthing you asked i already answered if you would have read it all.

This concludes that by changing the settings, in whatever form that i resetted the card several times and also that i dont know what else to do. therefore i just guess there is a hardware problem.
and all that was just to understand my situation.

The questions to be answered were wrritten below:
1:
Is there a way to find out if the card is damaged somehow ? test software or so ? (windows 10) (for the public of course, not the RME technicians)
2:
Are there sepeate chips which are responsible for lets say CH 1-8 , CH 9-16 and so on ? it would make sense if one of those are damaged as CH 1-8 are all mono. All others work fine in stereo,

The card can not have a 'defect' that causes such an effect. TM FX Reset causes correct routing, there is no hidden stuff or secret sauce necessary to make it work.

To check the card is easy. Plug the MADI output as loop back to the input, and check in TM FX what output channel comes back where.

Also your description is not 100% clear what 'mono' means here. Are channels 1/2 (and so on) not played on 1/2 respectively, but on 1 and 2 simultaneously? But not on 3 or others?

And are you working in single or double speed (sample rate) and have MADI card and Ferrofish set to the respective mode?

also wenn hier jeder Deutsch spricht kann ich ja auch deutsch schreiben. Ich schrieb nur english wegen der internationalität und damit alle user es lesen können. Egal.

also MC zu deinen Fragen.
Ich spiele alles in 48khz 24bit ab. Aufgenommen wird über madi wie gesagt NIE.  Über Options/Reset Mix/Total Reset hab ich TMFX geresettet aber wie ich schon schrieb auch auf andere "modes" gestellt, also wurde TMFX sowieso immer geresetted.
Ich weiss aber auch nicht was die sample rate mit mono/Stereo zu tun haben soll. Sample rate hat was mit anzahl der kanäle zu tun aber kanal 1-8 wäre immer kanal 1-8 bei 44 sowie bei 192 khz.
Anyway.
Wenn ich etwas auf den kanälen 1-8 abspiele bekomme ich ein Mono Signal. Egal ob ich die kanäle als stereo abspiele oder L/R als solo abspiele. Auch in Ferrofish ist alles auf 48khz eingestellt.
Habe ein stereo Sinus-signal erstellt und durchgeschickt, eine seite eine halbe sinuswelle verschoben sodas Digicheck einen Kreis anzeigt bei stereo.
Kanal 1-8 vertikale Linie, Kanal 9-32 Kreis.

OK es sieht nicht so aus als könnte man fotos irgendwie hochladen. Über die Funktion IMG bekomme ich nur einen HTML Code  (img)(/img) was mir nichts bringt weil die bilder nicht online sind.

However, ich habe also deinen Hinweis befolgt und das Optische MADI kabel direkt wieder in die karte gesteckt und siehe da, ein kreis wird aufgenommen. Also Stereo. Also liegt es nicht an der karte bzw dem Ausgang.
Frage ist nur woran es nun liegt. Am TotalMix? Am AD/DA Ferrofish Wandler. Im Wandler ist jeder Madi Kanal einem Analogen ausgang zugewiesen. Also Madi 1 = analog 1 Madi 2 = analog 2 .... Madi 32 Analog 32 aber wie ich bereits schrieb hatte ich auch das routing geändert und kanäle 1-8 waren immernoch mono. Dh also es muss eigentlich am TMFX liegen aber wie gesagt, hardware ist ok somit ist das thema hier wohl auch beendet. Wie ich jetzt rausfinden soll warum die kanäle 1-8 immer mono sind ist mir leider ein Rätsel.
Gute Hardware, auch noch nach Jahren !! Warum man unbeding Totalmix nutzen muss ist mir auch ein rätsel. Ich will nur kanale durchschicken, simple, das wars alles andere ist mir zu umständlich und zeitaufwendig. Ich will musik machen, kein routing weltmeister.

Neuste Treiber Version, neustes Digicheck, neustes TotalMix, Firmware v32, updatet irgendwie nicht auf v33. Auch nach mehreren Rechner runterter fahren. Aber CH1-8 Mono Problem war auch schon bei den vorherigen versionen vorhanden.

Musst Du doch nicht, Du kannst auch den DAW mode verwenden, dann routest Du halt in der DAW.
Aber dann immer mit der vollen RTL (round trip latency, also über USB3/FW/TB/PCIe ..) und die ist abhängig von der ASIO buffersize und kann dadurch auch schon mal über 10ms liegen, was für manche Anwendungen (spielen über virtuelle Instrumente) zu hoch ist.

Einer der Vorteile von TM FX ist, dass Du für jeden der Ausgänge ein eigenes Routing einstellen kannst, so wie Du es gerade brauchst. Dazu klickst Du nur auf den jeweiligen Ausgang und ziehst die Fader hoch oder runter wie Du es brauchst:
- von HW inputs (TM FX obere Reihe) um Audio ohne Verzögerung in "near-realtime" oder
- von SW playbacks (TM FX mittlere Reihe) um Audio vom PC mit etwas größerer Verzögerung über USB/FW/TB/PCIe ..
auf den jeweiligen (selektierten) Ausgang zu routen.

Es gibt in TM FX sogar eine Schnellfunktion, die ein Routing einstellt, die dem DAW mode exakt ähnelt.
Reset Mixer -> Straight Playback: All Playback channels are routed 1:1 to the Hardware outputs.
The faders in the third row are not changed.
Dadurch wird einfach nur der Software Playback Channel auf den korrespondierenden HW Output geroutet.
Dann hast Du quasi DAW mode plus die Flexibilität, doch noch das Routing für Monitore oder Kopfhörer zu verfeinern.

Man muss halt etwas Interesse zeigen und sich ein bisschen damit beschäftigen, dann wird man später auch reich belohnt, weil man dann nämlich versteht, wie einfach und logisch aufgebaut TM FX eigentlich ist und welche Möglichkeiten sich dadurch auftun. Muss man sich halt entweder drauf einlassen, oder halt nicht.

Also man kann keine Fotos direkt von HDD hochladen !! Nur Links, aber die brauche ich ja nun auch nicht mehr hochzuladen da ich es ja alles beschrieben habe. Den Rest des Routings den du beschriebst bezieht sich ja auch auf TMFX. Ja recht hast du man beschäftigt sich damit oder halt nicht. Ich halt nicht wink Weil brauche ich nie. Weil ich nie Kanäle ändere dann auch in einem Jahr ist kanal 16 Madi out bei mir noch Kanal 16 Analog. smile Warum sollte ich das ändern wollen. Hab ja 32 Kanäle, mit Summing alles top. Bis wie gesagt das CH1-8 halt nurnoch mono sind.

Mit den Bildern, die Du hochgeladen hast, kann ich offen gestanden nichts anfangen.
Jetzt weiß ich vom 1. Bild, dass der Ferrofish A32 clock master in Deinem Setup ist
Das 2. Bild zeigt mir halt Digicheck, aber das sagt mir nicht viel.

Was ich auch nicht verstehe ist, wie Du das mit mono meinst.

Ein Stereo Signal besteht letzten Endes aus 2 Kanälen.
Und es ist m.E. egal, ob Du das Stereo Signal an einen Stereo Ausgang oder an zwei Mono Ausgänge ausgibst, solange Du halt darauf achtest, dass der linke stereokanal auf einem und der rechte auf dem anderen landet.

Insofern wäre es interessanter, Dein Routing in TM FX zu sehen für den jeweiligen Ausgang, den Du meinst, beispielsweise MADI 1/2 OUT. Vermutlich hast Du irgendwas im Routing verfummelt und weißt es nicht.
Und da Du TM FX routing kategorisch ablehnst, kannst Du es vermutlich auch nicht systematisch troubleshooten.
Insofern sehr konsequent wink

Was mir übrigens noch auffiel. Auf der Rückseite eines Bildes vom BB steht, dass die ersten 8 Kanäle Mono Kanäle sind.

Ist es also nicht gewollt, dass die ersten 8 Kanäle Mono Kanäle sind ?
Letzten Endes mapped man doch in einer DAW einen Stereo kanal auf zwei hintereinanderliegende Mono Ausgänge...

Du musst dann nur in TM FX darauf achten, dass Du die Kanäle richtig routest.
Wenn die SW Playback Kanäle alle Stereo sind, dann sollten am besten auch die HW Outputs in Stereo konfiguriert sein.

Das beste wäre vermutlich im TotalMix Full mode, wenn Du folgenden Mixer Reset durchführen würdest:
1. Options -> Reset Mix -> Full Reset
2. Options -> Reset Mix -> Straight Playback (*)
(*) This is a routing like DAW mode as if TM FX would not exist. TM FX is like a patchbay. What you send in the application/DAW to an output appears in TM FX in the middle row. At this point TM FX acts like a patchbar.
Reset -> Straight playback ensures, that if you send something in the DAW to a particular output, that it will not only arrive on the software playback channel (TM FX middle row) but that it also becomes routed to the real HW output (TM FX bottom row) which is the physical output on your recording interface (in your case the MADI bus).

Heilige Schei$$e. Der Burl macht das !!?!?!! Den hab ich komplett übersehen,bzw. aus meinem Gedankenrouting entfernt.
Kurz zum Digicheck Screenshot den du nicht checkst. Ich schrieb ja vorher:

In dem screenshot steht ja oben auch drüber CH1-8 und CH9-32.
Dann werde ich jetzt doch mal den Burl verkaufen und mir wohl den Neve 5057 x 2 zulegen.

Na ja, ich bin es halt nicht gewohnt mit Vector Audio Scope zu arbeiten, was im Speziellen mono/stereo anbelangt, dafür habe ich es noch nie gebraucht. Da muss ich dann zu sehr überlegen, was mir die Ausgabe sagt, da schaue ich lieber aufs Routing.

Aber bei mir hats heute Nacht dann auch nicht mehr "klick gemacht", das hast Du gut gesehen, dass nämlich der Burl Mono daraus macht, ich hatte die Beschriftung am Eingang des Burl "Mono 1-8" nicht konsequent weitergedacht...

Ja genau so wars. Kanäle geswitched und plözlich klang der synth so dünn ??? Wo ist die Stereo breite geblieben ? und dann habe ich gemerkt das Ch1-8 Mono waren. Die Mono kanäle sind auch irgendwie immer nur Panned ganz links, Nicht center Mono. In TMFX habe ich auch rumgedreht aber das brachte keine änderung. Also bingen mir die ersten 8 CH dann mal rein gar nichts da ichs danach nicht mehr in ein Mischpult schicke.
Dank Dir auch nochmals fürs "finden" wink PS Wegen Digicheck habe ich mir überhaupt hauptsächlich meine erste RME Karte gekauft.Hammerfall. Da DC direkt von der Hardware "abgreift" kann die Spectrum Analyzer und Vector Scope Funktion genauer gar nicht sein und dann für jeden Kanal eins öffnen = Hammer ! Anyway. Thanks!

PS. Wenn ich jetzt drüber nachdenke, "Hammerfall". entweder sind die entsprechenden "Namensgeber/Erfinder" Rollen Spieler oder Metal hörer big_smile
