Topic: Fireface 400, Roland XV-5050, clock setting, and crackling

Situation:
2019 laptop MBP,
running Mac OS 10.14.6,
using Fireface 400, attached via Firewire 1-->Firewire 2 (or whatever it is) --> USB2 ?? --> USB 3 --> computer
1 cable + 2 adaptors (see pictures)

Plugged into the Fireface via the Coaxial IN, is a Roland XV-5050 sound module
( controlled by a MIDI-to-USB cable ).

See pictures.

Problem:   I get lots of crackling and the interface will sometimes simply lose connection.

I am not sure what's the best setting for "Clock Mode" --- Autosync?  Or Master?  ( when I set it to Mster, who's the master, the Fireface or the Roland?)

I'm also not sure if the problem lies in the long Firewire 1 --> Firewire 2 cable,  or the 2 adaptors I need to use (again see pictures).

If anyone else has had this problem or had advice, thanks in advance.

The setup shown in the photos is correct, the FF needs to be slave (AutoSync).

Problems will arise if the sample rate is switched away from 44.1. Next time you have the issue open Settings and check that everything is still unchanged.
