Topic: DC-coupled outputs require special cables?

I just got a UCX II, and while listening to tutorials on how to get CV out of my DAW to a modular system, I keep hearing that DC-coupled outputs need some special floating cables. Am I missing something or am I really in any danger of damaging my interface if I just use normal 1/4 jack cables?

The manual of the UCX II includes a whole chapter over DC CV/Gate operation, 20.3.
